Hi guys, any thoughts how HIGH this rock shield should be? Does it need to as high or higher than the hood of the car? I've seen a lot only 24" tall?
This is an open car trailer, looking for rock, chip protection.....

Can you explain it better, front, sides, both? Guess I haven't seen them, I'd think the vehicle pulling the trailer would eat all of the rocks?

Just the front.....

Just my two cents, in my mind 2 feet tall would probably suffice for protecting the edge of hood down.

If a rock where to hit the top edge and deflect upward it 'might' make contact with the windshield.

Personally I would make it high enough to come center windshield (probably in the area of 3 feet high), that way if something deflects off it has the chance to go up and over the car rather than smacking the glass.

Again, just my thought process..

Not a bad thought.....I guess 3' high will help me slow down too!

depends on what's towing it & how high the tow rig is
lifted trucks or 4x4's with aggressive tires
can chuck them rocks/gravel/dirt/dust back, severely

I had a couple with tool boxes &/or winches, battery,
tools, spare, tie-downs, various things inside them,
it was more of a place to store & carry stuff, securely
more than a "rock shield"
Mine were sort of wedge shaped, aluminum usually,
usually with a floor inside
I'd guess 30"-36" high maybe
just to clear the tool/storage box, starting just behind the jack
it was many years/decades ago now
sorry No photos

just don't put too much weight up there
it will affect tongue weight & where the car needs to be

mud/rock flaps/shields on the tow rig help wonders too

just food for thought

good luck

Thanks for the input......(still want an enclosed)

I would think about 3 foot high leaning back at about 3 degrees. It take air 10 foot to recover so the angle would throw everything over the car.

I have been contemplating the same idea, have a half ton pick up, which i don't want to replace, thinking it would not pull an enclosed well being too heavy, aluminum might be an option but $$$. i had a snowmobile trailer that was open with a salt shield which was basically a cone on the front, worked but didnt stop all of it. especially on two lane roads where oncoming traffic is a concern also.

I had an 18' enclosed and pulled with 1/2ram everywhere with no issues....use to haul 9000lb 5th wheel too....wish that 18 footer would've worked on this RR!

If on a budget, I have seen the blue plastic 55 gallon barrel cut in half length ways and then attach on trailer with barrel end to end. That will give you close to your size desired plus rounded to give some aero dynamic shape.

Thanks guys, I've seen both!

My closed trailer has a 2' aluminium plate in the front.

You can Google Rock Shields for open trailers for examples.

My father-in-law's trailer has the shield height a bit over the hood. Picture below is not the greatest and a few years old, but the shield really works great to protect the car. Highly recommended!

Do you know what it is made of?

It is made of fiberglass. Here is a picture of a shredded tire behind the shield. Best additional picture I could find.

If you want to do it on the cheap, go with steel roofing panel material.
