I have been slowly putting my 69 Coronet back together after I re-wired the entire car with an American Auto wire kit. I’ve come to a little issue as my horn (works) it’s just that when I put the steering wheel on and the little horn roller makes contact with the back of the steering wheel, it’s constantly on. I have my horn button attached to the steering wheel and the wire from the contact plugged in on the button. Not sure if what’s going on here. I have the steering wheel column ground wire on as well. It’s like it’s getting contact constantly but it’s not. Weird. Any suggestion?

Sounds like the horn switch is grounded to the wheel. Or the brass contact itself is grounded.

It looks like your steering wheel isn’t pushed on all the way (?). Why do you have a gap between the steering wheel and the steering column?

Not sure if it’s different than a 67, but on the back of my wheel there was a fiber washer between the wheel and the metal ring that cancels the turn signal. Before I put a new one it was broke apart enough that the horns would go off randomly. After I replaced it the problem hasn’t happened again.

That being said, maybe I accidentally fixed the issue while doing that and it had nothing to do with it haha

My 70RR did this exact thing. It was definitely the plastic bushing was cracked. Replaced that and everything has worked right since.

It’s not pushed on all the way, i just put it there for the picture. Also when I do tighten the bolt down there is a larger than normal gap.

I looked at the plastic bushing and it looked good. I guess I can try to replace it, where can I find one?

I would first put an ohm meter on the brass ring and steel splined area and see if it’s actually making contact.
I’m not sure where to buy a new one of those insulators. I had one I stole off of an old steering wheel.
Also if you do change it be sure to mark where that signal canceling rod is and put it back the same or your canceling will not work right.

What screw is this? Does not look right to me. Take it out and see what it does.

That is not a screw it’s an opening in the plastic plate and what you are seeing is the horn button plate. It looks like a screw from this angle but it is not.
I guess as long as all three screws are the same your Ok.

Also I tested the brass horn stud on the turn signal assembly and am getting 12v constantly. The steering column is properly grounded. Still at a loss here for what going on. The horn button plate on the steering wheel is fairly new. I got it new when I ordered the wood steering wheel a few years ago. Also the copper ring on the neck of the steering wheel looks good. I checked the rubber between the copper and the wheel and it looked good. I should have known better to re-wire this car myself, here we go with all the little issues.

Here is a simple test. Take a jumper wire. Attach one end to a good ground and touch the other to the brass wheel on the turn signal switch. If the horn beeps every time your wiring is correct on the car side. So the problem is in the wheel. Next remove the switch and try to put the wheel on. If it goes on and the horn does not beep the problem is in the switch. If the horn beeps you need to find out where the brass contact is going to ground.
