How cold does it have to be before it cracks the block?

Just a day and not a hard freeze your good.
It's supposed to be in the mid teens here on Wednesday morning. Figure the heat lamp will be on all night....and probably be cheaper to just dump in the antifreeze lol

I had my 383 freeze up solid to the point where the water pump wouldn't turn and it popped out the two block heaters (in frost plug holes), but it didn't crack the block. I should have plugged in the heaters...
How cold was it that time?

Yes add the antifreeze for those temps.

What about a really salty water solution...like seawater - that freezes at a much lower temperature.

Considering what it would cost to replace a block it’s money well spent to add the antifreeze. It’s not just the minor cost but a major inconvenience. Kim
Well, the beater isn't going to get a block replaced but rather it not get cracked....at least no yet :D

Not going to drive 9 miles for seawater lol
Is Taco Bell closer? Shove a Beef-n-Bean Burrito down the radiator. That should keep the block warm.....as least they warm stuff up when they exit. :carrot:

A gallon of straight antifreeze and let it run a little while after thermostat opens.
Remember to open the heater control so the core gets some.

Don't buy that 50/50 crap either as it is not real 50/50. I've used it and tested it and it only tests to about- 20, not the- 30 it says

On another subject what has happened to my avatar?

Run it to operating temperature and throw a blanket over the hood.

had a buddy with an unheated paint booth back in the day........ we would run the car in the booth while painting........ it was nice and toasty and the exhaust went out the fan with the paint fumes

I froze a 440 like that in my race car about -35.. the waterpump expanded so much it rubbed the balancer. Popped 1 blockheater. Ripped the impeller of the shaft. Still good!

Yup, a running car has never initiated an explosion.
Or are you using watercolors?

I have some antifreeze but was saving it for my 'better' junk instead of my 'junk' junk! But I'm still having some fun with my junk junk....especially with the straight pipe on this old V6:lol:

We don’t want to hear about a straight pipe on your junk.
