How dentists are treating your health like **** just to rip you off

I had the same dentist for probably 40 years - since high school. He sold out to big dental a few years before he retired. After he retired, I went to the dentist who took over for him. That was the last time I went there. I got pissed off when this 20 something dentist thought she should lecture me on not taking my statin prescription. I told her I'm not taking something that makes my legs ache like hell.

Our daughter went to my dentist for over 20 years - the only dentist she knew. After she moved to Chicago, she ended up having a root canal that I'm 99% sure was uneccessary and just a sheister job. It eventually led to the tooth having to be removed after an infection (at age 26). I don't know if she'll ever go to a dentist again. She thinks they're all crooks, and I can't blame her for thinking that.

One of the things that sucks about getting old is the people you've been going to for service for years (dentist, doctor, mechanic, etc...) start to retire and leave you at the mercy of some wet behind the ears giblet heads. I now have a dentist who I think is ok, but who really knows?

One of the main reasons I've kept my attorney's license even though I haven't practiced in years, is that it keeps me in the loop of seeing who is excellent, and who is not, through professional networking. I won't use someone who isn't significantly better than I was back in the day. I spent 3 years checking out the law firm I currently use. I was lucky my dentist did the same, before handing the practice over to the new guy.

Yeah, in a similar manner, when I was a child, and even into my 20s it always seemed like there were service related people who were obviously older than I was.
Turning 60 this month, it's still really strange to have my doctor look younger than I do!

Yep, we've got a good one here also. Every six months like clockwork, the miniature Dremel-like thingy
comes out and the lady knows to have at it whole hog on my teeth, no holds barred.
Then the dentist comes in, has a quick chat and a gander at anything pressing, then I'm outta there.
No fishing for work, no made up diagnosis.
Same deal here. Very thorough and professional.

Same dentist for 35 plus years.. I need to go cause I have not been there the last 2-3 years but to this day never had a cavity...

I’ve only been to my dentist a couple of times since he stopped taking my insurance because the insurance “dictated “ how much he could charge for procedures. Total rip-off. Now, if I could find one who has a miss Hasenfuss assisting, I could go there.

Lots of Indian and Pakistani dentists in Canada .

your point is valid Micheal, and ill even go one further..

Doctors, prescribing drugs just to sell them...and getting paid for doing it.
the crazy part,is when you look at the Side effects that are possible with some of these.
bleeding,organ failure,Death....but hey...gotta take that prescription !

I’m going to chime in one more time - this time about a dentist I went to when I first moved to Colorado. If I remember correctly I think I had some kind of HMO like dental plan thru work. So I had just recently moved there and didn’t know anyone. I picked a guy out of a hat. Went in, sat down - I don’t even recall him scanning my choppers. He took x-rays, tossed them into a cup, poked around a bit which I took to be his idea of a cleaning. That was the extent of the new patient evaluation and cleaning. Then I Think I may have had a co-pay - I said to him - What’s the deal with the x-rays - don’t we look at them to see if there’s any issues? He says - No what I do is look at them later and if any problems I’ll call you. WTF? I’m young, late twenties but far from a complete idiot. He collects the insurance payment, my co-pay and delivers no services - and in fact he even got a little huffy with me for even suggesting something seemed to be missing in his evaluation. Needless to say I never went back. How do you hook a new Patient with that kind of first time service? The whole 10 years I lived there I never really found a dentist that was close to satisfactory. I’ll say again - it seems to me it’s more difficult to find a good, legit dentist than a family doctor.

Just like every other medical profession, there are good ones and bad ones. There are also crooks out there, so buyer beware. If you are given a questionable prognosis, get a second, or even a third opinion.

With that said i recently visited my dentist and he was NOT trying to sell me something. (Except removing tooth stone and a cleaning, which i agreed to.)
But that's rarely the case these days.

I had horrible dentists growing up. It was all my family could afford, but thats another story. As it was, I stopped going in my late teens. I avoided the dentists in the navy as best as I could, but couldn't avoid them completely. After being discharged, I didn't do the dentist thing for 3 years. My wife suggested her dentist. I relented and went. He was outstanding. He had a lot of cathing up to do, but it was painless. After about 10 years and perfect dental health he retired and sold the practice to his young padawan. He was quite good also. The thing is...as his family grew, so did the amount of "issues" he found that needed immediate attention. When it reached the point where he was driving multiple high end cars and I had to have one or more procedures everytime I had a cleaning (2× per year), I went looking for better pastures. I found an absolutely fantastic private practice that has not found any issues in over 3 years. Great people, easily work with both of my insurance companies. Couldn't be happier.

I'm lucky I was gifted with good teeth

I have a good friend that is a dentist,
we were/still are really golf buddies back in my Rancho Murieta days
before I moved up here
I still make the 100+ mile drive to go there,
his practice is just outside Sacramento...

He does a great job & reasonable prices too
He even gives a discount if you pay cash or by check,
not with credit-cards
for the insurance co-pays, a 10% discount
He does well & has a huge customer base...
He's taken on a couple of other dentists/partners, from time to time
& hygienists too
he goes thru hygienists, like I go thru TP

I ended up needing 2 root canals, 2 crowns
he did me right

I had a couple of issues with 2 fillings in my lower molars
I had way back in HS 1974-ish, (in like 1997-ish)
buy some Hippie dippy dentist, my now ex-stepmother 'fatty Patty'
took me to when I was in HS...
We were living in Georgetown Ca. area, there weren't many choices
he was a full on hippie with a big yellow bus just like the
painted up Beatles 'Yellow Submarine bus'...
I always got 'the creeps' going into that place...

My dad goes to a shyster dentist up here, now
I don't care for the guy, my dad insists on going there...
He's done a crapload of stuff repairing his partials (60's crap)
instead of replacing the falsies with implants
or something more modern/viable alternative
he could have done easily at least 10+ years ago with less cost
be far better off now too
than constant repairs over & over again, cha-ching

My dad always talks about the cute young hygienists
(they are attractive, my dad knows their parents too)
he's actually 'followed a couple of them' to different dentists
on their recommendations too
it actually was a really good move/change
but;
Dad, he's 85 & he won't change, he won't demand different stuff
so he just deals with it (I tried to change his mind too)
it's pricey as **** too, to keep fixing the old bridge/partials/falsies
1-2 times a year, running around with 60% of his teeth
(he dove out of a A100 truck into a bush in his 20's, brakes went out & took out a few teeth)
while they repair the old bridge/partials, looks like **** too IMHFO...
I kid him & say nice tooth, he knows
for what he's spent he could have 'pearly whites'
not the same old dingy **** he's had since 1960 something...

I had read something recently in one of my bros.
Dr. Mark's medical journals
about the "alleged" link between our dental/teeth health
& the old silver or other fillings &/or it's linked to Alzheimer's (not conclusive)
it's sort of scary for those with a crapload of old tooth fillings
