The alen screw has been removed. The knob and button rotate but won't come apart. What am I missing.

The button is keyed to the knob... You turn both... Sounds like the threads in the button might be buggered...The button you turn not the knob.
Not on my 66, you unscrew button. The knob is keyed. I only know 66's.The button is keyed to the knob... You turn both... Sounds like the threads in the button might be buggered...
Thought you could unscrew button without undoing set screw. I'm fairly sure I've had the button unscrew some and and screwed it in a turn or 2.The knob is keyed to the button. If the set screw is removed, they unscrew and loosen the spring. Maybe a little "up pressure" is needed if the button threads are worn. I had to replace the button once or twice. The plastic didn't hold up all that well.
If thats the case the key on your button has worn down....Thought you could unscrew button without undoing set screw. I'm fairly sure I've had the button unscrew some and and screwed it in a turn or 2.
Sounds like a voice of experience....Personally I've never used glue where it doesn't belong...Trust Me....Someone may have screwed with Op's knob, causing a difficult removal.
Possibly glued in place.
So it's a B body... Cause E bodies have a straight shifter and use a rod.... Sounds like your probably going to need another shifter..That's how I thought it came off. It's been rotated about 30 turns. I can see the cable thru the allen screw hole. The cable itself is spinning.
