The alen screw has been removed. The knob and button rotate but won't come apart. What am I missing.
Doug

Turn it counterclockwise, some take 5-6 complete turns. The knob threads onto the cable. The spring under the button will make it pop up when off the threads.

Unless maybe the threads are buggered up in the knob

The knob is keyed to the button. If the set screw is removed, they unscrew and loosen the spring. Maybe a little "up pressure" is needed if the button threads are worn. I had to replace the button once or twice. The plastic didn't hold up all that well.

Thought you could unscrew button without undoing set screw. I'm fairly sure I've had the button unscrew some and and screwed it in a turn or 2.

If thats the case the key on your button has worn down....

Couldn't find a picture of a 66-68 that showed the key but I did find this Eye Candy...

Going to look at mine tomorrow to see if my memory is that fuzzy. Could be.

Someone may have screwed with Op's knob, causing a difficult removal.

Possibly glued in place.

I did have a used shifter a few years ago that someone has painted in a hurry. The paint had been soft when it was reassembled, causing it to get 'stuck' when I pulled it apart some time later.

It happens.

That's how I thought it came off. It's been rotated about 30 turns. I can see the cable thru the allen screw hole. The cable itself is spinning.

So it's a B body... Cause E bodies have a straight shifter and use a rod.... Sounds like your probably going to need another shifter..

On a '70, no F'ing way. The set screw needed to be loosed. Done MANY times over many years.

Edit: This was on my E body '70.

Actually an A Body.

On A bodies, you hold down the black plastic button, then turn the knob along with the button counter-clockwise until the button unthreads from the cable. There is a spring below the button that is under tension, so keep your hand on the button.

What cable? Ya there is a spring below the button, that's why there is a set screw in the knob.
