How do you remove the shift knob from a 70 auto floor shifter?

On a '70, no F'ing way. The set screw needed to be loosed. Done MANY times over many years.

Edit: This was on my E body '70.
I only have 66. 1 wildr/t posted photos of chome and a 70 both keyed. Want to look at my 66.
 
As far as I know ALL console shifter buttons are keyed to the knob.
Regardless if chrome or black button.
same goes for chrome or woodgrain knobs
Thus requires to loosen the allen set screw and unscrew the knob and button off as one assy

And once opened up there is a shaft thats I believe 8-32 threads , to some it may appear to be a cable, but its not

I do not know about a '66 shifter. I do know about my several '70 slapsticks and how they worked. You know what you know, and I know what I know.

It's a cable with a fused on threaded end.
Sometimes the cable frays right below that.
 
What cable? Ya there is a spring below the button, that's why there is a set screw in the knob.

They are indeed Identical. The only difference is the knob and button.
OK, only know about the '70 model. Which I had a couple. I know what I had do since I did it many times. If yours is different, so be it.

70 Duster. A good friend of my son who has always called my wife and I Mom and Dad. He always wanted to do a hot rod. Finaly got up some cash. We looked for a year for a decent Duster. Bought this one in pieces. Only 2 small patches in the body. Tons of extra parts. Came with all the 340 stuff except heads for $6k. Sold the factory disc, 8 3/4, ralley wheels, fresh 340 short block, 340 exh manifolds. Its getting the turbo motor from my sons 62 Plymouth. Pure street car. No cage.

That's a great looking Duster. Congrats.
 
I had the same problem getting my shift knob off. I ended up cutting the top off the button using a Dremel and then using a screwdriver to destroy the remainder of the button inside the shifter. Then the knob came right off. I have the wood knob and was going to replace it anyway, but if your shift knob is good, all you need to do is order a new button and possibly the spring. Hope that helps.
