My starter has died. Need a date coded one. How far before should it be? I found a wiper motor Six weeks out and called it good enough. I found one starter about three months before.

It could be after SPD. Don't get too caught up in this "months before" myth. My Bee's SPD is Feb 25th. My engine wasn't built until the 26th and exhaust manifolds weren't cast until Feb 27th!

As cars were built AFTER the SPD, what is date code correct for your car could be AFTER the SPD.

Compare date codes for other similar components of you can and see if you can see a pattern.

While most of us on these boards are at least loosely aware of the SPD not being exact, that’s a tough sell when things like your intake has a date right in it a week before the car was built. Then the question of how long would any grace period be? A week, a month, a year? Besides, even if you bumped it out say two weeks, how many more cores will that free up? Not many is my guess.

If you mean a pattern on other cars, especially survivors, that’s what I’m looking for here. Only thing I know of on my car is the intake. Carb is correct number, I never did follow up on its date code. Wiper motor is a 75 that I’m replacing with the unit dated six weeks before. Alt had a big ole reman sticker on it when I got the car, never bothered to look hard at piece of course. Exhaust manifolds are correct number, haven’t looked into those. Do they have dates?

I’m only interested now that the starter has died. I’m not some super numbers stickler, just when it seems time to do something I might go for a little more effort. The wiper motor had to go though, it works great, but looks like a steaming pile back there.

I’ll add that about five years ago, either Mopar Action or MCG featured a car that had its original warranty booklet. It was noted those have a hand written date in them from the assembly line and that is the only way to know the exact date your car was built for sure.

As mentioned, there is no " should be date" , but can't go too far wrong at a month before

Exhaust manifolds will have casting dates. Look for dates on the K member, mirrors/glass, drive line, if possible, and hood latch.

application specific parts , Carb as example will be a little farther from SBD

Common parts, such as starter relay , starter , etc etc will be very close to the sbd date.

MY 2cents

This is consistent with my current GTX, which was retired and preserved when it was four years old.
