Hey guys
Gettin ready to strip my 69 Coronet down to bare metal, do some welding, and repaint.
So far the only thing I've bought is 5 qts of base. F6....gonna look sweet. 5 qts is probly more than I need but I figured I would get extra just in case I need some down the road. F6 isn't the easiest color to get so it will be good to have extra.
Im thinkng ill do epoxy then filler where I need it....then a high build..then base and clear.
I've already decided that I'm getting from southern polyurethanes....I just don't know how much of each.
I'm only doing the exterior and engine bay....and I have a vinyl top and lift off hood so really not that much to do.
Any thoughts on how much epoxy, high build, and clear? I was thinking a gallon of each would be plenty but wanted to see what u guys thought.
Thnx for the help

I don't use high build, as you spend way more time (imho) sanding it straight again. But, as your question was how much, I usually get 2 gallons of everything, especially colors, as then you have enough for what ifs...

Good point....so do u base over epoxy?

Ya....even tho I said 1 gallon each....they are 1:1 with activator so actually 2 gallons sprayable.....which is what I meant.
Only the high build is 4:1.

I go epoxy (over any leading or bare), then urethane over that and any body fill. I just avoid the primer that is like sprayable body fill, and is sometimes referred to as "high build." Sorry I wasn't more clear.

I'm afraid it won't be as easy as you make it sound, sand, weld and paint. How we all wish it was!

Well, theoretically, it should be, lol. 99.9% of the time it gets a bit more involved.

I use SPI poxy and clear almost all the time. The epoxy is easier to sand than most epoxy primers and yet more solvent resistance than most. It is a 1 to 1 mix so I would go with 1 gal of each. You can even use this as a sealer after your body work is done. Just reduce it per their recommendations if you are using it as a sealer. The Universal Clear is also a 1 to 1 mix so with 1 gal of each you will have enough. As a rough guess the 5 qts of base should be enough as long as it is a top line base and not an economy line of paint. Good luck.

I agree. 5 qts should be enough especially if you are getting over 2 gallons sprayable. Just did my 70 Charger and had 1.5 sprayable and had a little bit left over.

The term high build is used a lot in primer but the one I think Beastly is referring to is the polyester primer. Like spraying bondo. Goes on very thick. I used a Urethane High Build to get the subtle waves and sanding lines out of mine. Would prob only use the polyester if I wanted to shortcut it and get it done fast.

Epoxy over bare metal, then filler if needed, then high built over epoxy and filler, then base(you can put a sealer on before base but check with primer directions to see if needed)

Thanks, had brainfade on the polyester name. Yeah, I found that stuff to always be more a pain than it was worth.
