Next month I will be installing a 526 stroker into my 72 satellite and was wondering how much torque a stock 727 can handle. I will be running a 2500 stall converter. Car is mainly used for cruises, smoking tires and a little lite drag racing. The stroker will produce around 670FPT. Rear axle is 3.55 and I will run mostly street tires. Also any recommendations for a newer 4 or 5 speed auto. I want to avoid any major conversions

Alot of Great upgrades for the 727 out there! I would do that as it's a Very strong Slush box !!

With mostly street tires, my guess is you won't hook up well enough to kill the tranny. They'll just spin and burn rubber.

If your wheels hook, my guess is the stock tranny won't last too long. As stated by wedge, there are a lot of ways to make a 727 very stout!

Even if you get a lot of wheel spin, it will eventually hook up and then that's when the problems arise. You built the engine, now build the trans. Easy enough....just more money :D

X2. You should put at least half of what you have in the engine into the trans.

Let me start by saying I'm not a transmission expert by an means but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Sorry, I just had to say that. I'm in the middle of a complete overhaul on my 727 and have found some very good information in Carl Munroe's book. I bought this book online for $16.95 (including shipping). It might be a good resource for you. I haven't found any numbers in regards to maximum torque but read the section that I posted. It mentions 500 HP as the limit to stock and anything over that you should consider upgrades.

I'm sure there are other books covering the subject.

Start with a trans shield.:icon_winkle::icon_winkle: A billit drum is a good idea along with a bolt in sprag and steel planets:blob1:
I have broken several parts as the wick gets turned up:glasses2:

Well, I didn't go far enough then. Only 3700 in the tranny, and I thought I was playing it safe.

Just got an email from a friend of mine and he stated that a stock 727 assuming in top shape will handle 550FPT. Assuming I don't push to hard and keeping street tires I'll be okay. He recommends a rebuild with higher line pressure and stouter clutch packs provided no drag racing and sticky tires. Well I got the maximum torque number now for the second question. Any recommendations for a 4 or 5 speed automatic trans? Oh, I don't do transmissions nor engines I leave that to folks that got the tools and the experience.

Might not hurt to either read some professional literature or stay at a Holiday Inn. Appreciate the suggestion.

I went with the SSF from TCI, lots of good info and also a message board forum on their website.

With the right internals lots. My ex-boss runs a BA/A Pontiac, with a Steve Schmidt pro-stock (around 1200 Dyno'd HP) engine in it. It has run high 6's at over 200MPH. The trans: was originally a TF727, now a 904. His company makes all kinds of goodies for the transmission industry. Have a look at what they can supply you and have supplied a lot of other.

I think I got my answer concerning a stock 727 so with that in mind, can anyone suggest alternate 4 or 5 speed automatics that would not involve major conversion work.

The only item that would require little to no work would be a gear vendors unit. A member here (gregoryc) is running one behind a stroker. Give him a shout.

Understand that the units are quite expensive but I'll see if I can't contact him
