Greetings, I am looking at a 66 Charger that was set up to race, but would not take much to get her back on the street. The problem is it needs a VIN number to be titled. I am located in Ohio and the car is also in Ohio. Owner states that you can purchase a tag off of a junked car to apply to the car you want to title, and use that number. Has anybody done this? Or what other options are there? I just don't have a clue.
Thanks, Doug

This is a go to jail type thing, but if you do get a number off another car and put it on there.......DON'T EVER tell anyone.

State of Ohio will issue you a vin and title

Agreed, that is a go directly to jail do not collect $200! (if you remember the monopoly game!) Get a state issued vin

LOL ok glad I asked. Any idea on the hoops to jump through and what the cost might me to get the state issued VIN?

every states different. here in Wisconsin the car must be inspected by the state patrol. I'm sure your DMV or sherrifs office could give you some info.

Here in NC, you have to have the DMV issue a new V.I.N. and you have to get what is called a indemnity (surety) bond issued from an insurance company that deals with indemnity bonds. The bond runs for 3 years and during that time I get a provisional title issued for the new V.I.N.

After the 3 years is up, I get a permanent title issued. From what I understand it's pretty painless, I'm currently waiting for the V.I.N. to be assigned and then I get to fill out paperwork, get 2 car appraisals and then the bond.

I've had a couple of race cars and the VIN was still on them....no reason to take it off unless the car was stolen to build a race car with.

That was the question that popped into my head... why is there no VIN on the car ?? I'd start there first, before doing anything else.

If I was going to use a vin and title from another car these message boards would be the last place I'd be asking or talking about it.

This is Directly from Ohio BMV.
Contact the Titling Support & Dealer Licensing Section at 614-752-7671 and ask for a VIN replacement packet to be mailed to you. The enclosed letter will explain how to submit the proper documents to the BMV for a VIN replacement, which can result in either the Patrol making a VIN replacement plate or applying directly through the manufacturer. A manufacturer's plate takes 6-8 weeks. After completion, you may have the title replaced at any county Title Office.

Unfortunately he has been turned in to the police, hope he likes baloney sammiches served on a concrete floor

Yeap, felony. If he doesn't have the title then you'll need a court ordered title which if granted will be followed up by a state trooper inspection of the car before the title is issued, not having a vin for the troopers to confirm identity would not be good. Let me put it this way "it's a gamble" judge doesn't have to yes nor does the inspectors, it's completely in they're hands and if the troopers cannot identify the car "it's destroyed". I wouldn't buy it.

Ohio is notoriously strict regarding ANY motor vehicle laws.

BTW, your ISP knows your computer's IP address and can and does track and keep records of sites you visit and their IP addresses. There is metadata info that links your username on this site with your ISP supplied IP address.

All this is fodder to be potentially subpoenaed as evidence.

Just sayin'

you can usually go to the state trooper facility and they can help with the paperwork .... in re issuing a new vin
