Posted this question on FABO also. Have a 1973 NOS Carter two-barrel for my 318 I am installing to replace the original 1972 Carter two-barrel. Need to use the old bracket/stud that the air cleaner wing nut screws onto. How on earth do I remove the bracket/stud from the old carb, seems to be affixed on there forever? Is it "spring" loaded, or bent to fit? I'm not as strong as I used to be. How do I get enough leverage to pop the darn thing off? Thank you.

Are you talking about the thread all? Go buy some more and cut to length. I believe it's 1/4 -20 threads or jam 2 nuts together then put a wrench or socket on the top nut.

I am talking about the solid rod that is bent in a "U" and hooks into the carb air horn. It is the top of that "bracket" that holds the air cleaner stud over the air horn. I am not talking about only the threaded part, I mean the entire bracket. Look at the first photo and you can see there is no way to screw on the air cleaner lid, no wing nut stud, no bracket to hold the wing nut stud. The lower foto (not a good view, sorry) shows the two "pedestals" that rise above the air horn that hold the bracket ("U" shaped round rod) for the wing nut stud.

the u shaped bar is kinda spring loaded into the air horn.the fist pic shows the small hole the bottom of that bar fits into(sun lite is shining through it).sides of the u go into the grooves on the air horn.

Hey Dibbons, the hoop, or 'U' shaped part has a bit of spring tension so it stays in place once installed. On your carb, you should be able to get a narrow flat blade down from the top into the slot above the hole on each side of the hoop and simply pry gently until it comes out of the hole.

Be careful. I cracked the side of a core carb in experimenting with removing this. Its a bieetch

That, and it IS possible to break that "U"-shaped bracket! Ask me how I know this. Use care when pulling this off the carb, and it'll come off pretty readily.

Got it off the old carb and put back on the NOS carb. It did not take a whole lot of force. I used something like piano wire looped 4 times around and then tied the wires around a large Craftsman screwdriver that i pulled on like the rowing machine handles at the gym. The only hang up was when reinstalling it on the NOS carb, the wires snapped and I had to relopp them a second time using 6 times around and that did the trick. I also bolted the carbs back on the intake manifold to keep them steady during the operation. Thank for the tips, warnings, and cautions.

That's a great tip for doing that way, with no pressure on the carb!
