Perfect timing for this thread, my 80 year old buddy I am helping with his 73 Duster project needs a new 4wd SUV type car for his wife and asked me to help him find one. I know of a few to stay away from like the chebby Traverse and the GMC Acadia, and of course his Trailblazer.
What do you guys think/recommend? Are Kias and Hyundais the way to go now?
Maybe consider a Subaru?...they aren't too expensive. I know four people with Subarus. Three of them are in snow country: Colorado (north of Denver), New York (near Cooperstown), and Canada (Quebec) and they have not had power train issues at all. Some are repeat Subaru owners. All are 60+ to 75+ years old. They swear by them.

I agree with Wayne,my sis has had 3 subarus and on her 4th this year. One year she had a ram pickup.

While they are designed for lesbians, they are pretty decent. Doing the oil leaking headgaskets sucks. Do the homework on the year/ model you want.

subarus are expensive and have a fair share of mechanical quirks/issues.

That being said, if I had to be a Japanese car guy, I could probably be a subaru guy.

They have some interesting products and technology.

I've always kind of wanted a brat, and I had friend in the 90's that had an xt-6. That was a fun car.

Thought about Subaru too, bought a new 2006 Legacy for my daughter, she drove it until 2021 when she traded it in for a new Crosstrek. I did the maintenance for her, all it needed was timing belts, steering pump, steering rack, tierod ends, brakes, batterys small stuff. Pretty reliable car. Maybe they have fixed the head gasket problem by now. On the other hand, every time the fast lane is plugged up by somebody poking along and proud of it, seems to always be a green Subaru station wagon.
