I don't understand how mammals survive such cold temperatures.

Ok I can see a Grizzly Bear surviving with that heavy coat, but what about deer? It seems most mammals will grow a heavier coat in winter but not that heavy. Deer, horses, cattle, etc. don't grow what I would consider a heavy winter coat. I'm not sure how they survive extreme cold as a lot of these animals can live in the far north.

My short answer to that question SS is, our Creator who made them gave them everything they needed to endure, and strive in the climate that they are in. I do believe in limited adaptation, we see salt water fish that can survive just fine in fresh water where rivers enter the oceans, and vice-versa.
I think the same thing when I see pictures of buffalo , standing in snow up to their necks, with pounds of ice hanging off their bodies, how do they survive in all that sub freezing temps for weeks at a time....

Here in NJ, they keep their blood flowing by daring each other to run out in front of moving cars! Almost everyone I know has hit at least one. I tagged one in January 2042. We have approx. 10 times the sustainable level here in the great garbage state. Our governor is completely oblivious it, but then, he's a city boy! They should have legal hunting all year round! Damn Things!

yesterday out clearing snow and the dog was barking at something down by the lake! I see a 16" tall owl in the tree and a large black squirrel not far away in same tree! I carried on working and coming back down in that area, just in time to see the owl carrying off the squirrel! I'm sure it's got a full belly today!
10 years ago I use to look after a large casino, we brought in a bird guy to look after gulls and pigeons hanging around! he tethered a hawk on the roof,but every night he would come and collect it. when i asked him why he said an owl would come and kill it, now I believe him!

1970/71 ? Winter, we tied my youngest brother to a clothes line post. He survived .
He was out there for quite a spell. Had tears and snot frozen on his face. Took awhile to get him warmed back up.
He still brings that up in front up people at times.

I ask my dogs that very question every morning when I go to work the last few months - It was -10 below in WI this morning , as they refuse to come in the garage running around outside at 4AM like it’s a party time

When they are sleeping in there igloos and I rub there tummies honestly it feels like a heated blanket

All eight of the dogs we rescued from the humane society over the years
