I don't want to go to work tomorrow.

Yeah, I am accustomed to periods of unemployment. Since 1988, this company has been my "Home Base". I go off elsewhere when they don't have work so I'll do that again. I just like working for them.
I do get that. In the eighties I had a job at a metal fab shop (cause construction was in the dumps then) and would get calls from my union at the shop I worked for. I would say goodbye to them for a while and they said -hope to see you back when the your new job is finished.

I just noticed that I started this thread almost a year ago!

Yesterday... I didn’t want to go to work tomorrow so I’m home today! 3 day weekend!

Yesterday I got a call from one of the owners of the company that I have worked for off and on since 1988. One of the owners sold his house and moved to New Mexico. They have no jobs lined up and are closing the business.
Son of a bitch, I really liked the guys that I worked with. I liked the bosses too. We had finished a job in August and I have been out of work since then looking for something else, hoping that the old company would stumble onto something.
I did find work today with a reputable company but I'll miss the guys that I have worked with all those years.

Can you become the new owner instead of them closing it down?

When I started in the construction business it was to get away from a daily routine. --Since 1976 I have not had a steady job- but on most of my jobs- I met up with folks I met and worked with on previous jobs.--Hand shaking and where you been kind of stuff. All good.

I like DeltaV's question. What do you think about running your own business?--This is an important question.
Enjoy your work or step up and changeup.

Yeah, I like my job but after 5-6 days of staying up late, sleeping in and lazing around, Im not all that motivated to get back to the regular routine just yet. What about you ?
Hey man I don't blame you.........I never want to go to work (sucks when you hate your job).

It is a sad thing. Of the two owners, one has daughters that have no interest and the other has a son in Los Angeles with a solid gig down there.
Me ?? I want out of this state PLUS what I like about construction is the actual work, not the office side of it all. I want to frame and build stuff. I don't care to deal with the business side of it.

Tomorrow ends the first full week with this new company.

Things have really changed in this industry. Being with the same company for so long, I didn't see how everyone else had really ramped up their safety protocols.
On this job, it is the expected stuff like long pants, boots and the hard hat BUT it is also eye protection, reflective vests and safety harnesses. I really hate that stuff. The old company had a solid group of guys and bosses that didn't enforce the intrusive safety stuff. We were all competent and didn't take stupid risks so they didn't impose the freakish regulations. This is a bigger company that gets a LOT more work so they are constantly getting new people....Guys that may be dumb as rocks or as smart as can be. They have to play it safe to avoid injuries.
I wish that I could "Opt Out" of some of that stuff.

Gotta get up at 245am, lest than 6 hours. Start at 4 done by noon, normally I skip it as its optional, but I need to get building permits tomorrow, easier without a 4 year old at my side.

Current protocol with insurance and safety record play a big role in being a successful bidder for contractors. Getting away with cutting corners regarding safety can put bidding contractors out of work.

Oh, because I cant sleep here what happened last friday. Came in, other clowns started early and i was doing emails and dolling out work orders on our system. My desk is in the shop and Mike says hey watch out for nice I saw one and put a trap down by you, close to your feet. I look down and theres a mouse trap with a dried up used tampon in it. ******* 3rd shift janitor joke I guess. Apparently college girls leave their plugs on the floor so they make a "white tailed red mouse" and it gets passed around. Sick bastards. I dont get excited about that ****, but I dont forget. I love games, I always win

Congrats on the new job. Those poor so-and-sos don't know what they're in for. :)

At least you don't have to wear your flare (See the movie Office Space for meaning).

Yeah....
Wearing the vest, attached to the harness makes work so much harder. The harness is attached to a stranded steel cable that is under tension so every move is akin to a dog pulling on a leash. Imagine trying to carry things, turn and work when a cable is pulling you all the time. I hate that. I have not fallen in 15 or more years and even then, I caught myself. Nobody got hurt at my last job. The guys were all great workers that knew their limits.

One fall could be life changing event. Friend who does safety train said 50% of falls above 15 feet are fatal. Your close to retirement don't f it up now!

I have one company I contract to that 6 feet you need a sky hook and no pocket knifes
and fill out a safety book with trip and fall and pinch etc

I know.....4 months from my 30 year mark but I'm still quite capable and agile.
I don't like confinement. I don't like small cars and don't like wearing so much that I feel slowed down. The people that make these policies are as bad as politicians. They set standards for other people to follow, not themselves. If they ever were to wear a harness like these in 100 degree heat, they would devise another method.

I think that for people that move at a slower pace, being encumbered with this stuff may not be so bad.
Me? I am always moving. I take pride in getting a lot of work done. Inefficiency just digs at me. In colder weather while wearing all these clothes, then a harness, I feel like an overloaded truck running on flat tires. I just can't move like I want to.
I have done side jobs building roofs on houses and it is a blast from the past for me. Radios, shorts, sport shoes and "safety" is up to my own discretion. THAT is a great way to make a buck but it does not get me closer to my pension.
I guess I just need to run out the clock and see how I feel at that point.
There are some nice things about the job. It is within a half hour as opposed to the 107 mile one way commute from my last job!
