I came across a 1968 Hemi GTX that has been ran hard wrecked and then put away wet... The car is really rough but it is a hemi car and has the #'s matching engine out of the car. The car is really just the body...no rearend and a tree is growing in the engine compartment. The car has been hit hard in front and will need all body panels..My question is what is a car worth in this condition?? Yes it is a hemi but it needs EVERYTHING....I am considering making a offer on the car then selling my 70 cuda to help with the resto.

Trans, options, color combo, fender tag, broadcast sheet???

there is value in it but my money would be looking at the motor. i would make an offer pending on the the motor being salvagable. it goes to an equally agreed shop for tear down and if it is good this much, $$$$, no good but some parts, $$. either way the body goes with it.
the body has some value due to hemi but it boils down to whether you are a half full glass guy or a half empty glass guy.

just my thinking out loud. good luck half a glass.

I dont know about anyone else but I want to see pics of this Hemi car-
Here's hoping he sells cheap and you get to restore it-

IMO yes it is a hemi gtx with the original motor and it would require alot of work to get the car from the tree. but i would think as long as the frame is not bent or rusted too bad i would think this could be saved. It might take you longer than you would want to on a resto but i think it would be worth it in the long run if you could buy it for an agreeable price.

Might be easier to rebody it if it is hit hard and needs all panels replaced! It's worth what ever you you feel is a fair price!

A rebody would be an easy solution if it was legal :tied up:

An original 68 Hemi GTX in yesterday's market would be worth $120K
in todays market $65K to $85K

A project in the shape you describe is an easy $50K resto

The question here is it worth it to you to spend the $50K plus purchase price of say $10K............Getting real close to the pay off number. (this market)

Ofcourse I've seen guys buy real junk and pay big $$ just for the J code fender tag.

Crap shoot anyway you look at it..................But when its all done you get to say you have a original Hemi GiTX!!!!!

Good luck and keep us posted on the out come

keep your cuda.. sounds like a financial nightmare, unless you are a glutton for restoration punishment

I keep thinking about it. If I do score the GTX I would have to sell my 1970 Cuda and most likely my 1967 Coronet R/T 440 4 speed dana car...That would leave me with the GTX, 2 Coronets and only 3 Darts...LOL.
I have to look the car over from top to bottom to see if it is really worth the money.

I would Buy it put it away. till the market comes back ,if it will ever. Did yu see Barret Jackson , very very sad sight cars werent even meeting the reserve on all Chevys,Mopars,Fords,

IMO, I think Barret Jackson is not a true source for mopar value. If anything the auction has hurt the muscle car world. Everyone compares that old rusted muscle car that they have to one on the auction block. And then wants way to much money for the car so it just sits and rusts some more...
Sorry but not a big fan of Barret Jackson Auctions.:eusa_boohoo:>i know..lol

Yeah Bar.Jack. sucks. They have hurt the hobby while lining their pockets. It would be ok if people relized that those are not average cars or even drivers. But a gtx hemi would be very cool. You have too decide if its worth what you would have to give up. Thats how i look at my next toy. right now trying to decide what to give up to get another 70

RESPONSE:
I just KNEW the rebody subject was right around the corner in this post. It is only illegal in very FEW states. All others have a provision for it in the V.I.N. tampering law as does the federal Law on this. It has been going on since the 30s.

RESPONSE:
How can you blame B-J for this? They are just an auction SERVICE, they don't hold a gun to the heads of the buyers or sellers who determine the selling prices of the cars just as any other auction service.

RESPONSE:
The original poster has not answered the questions in my first post in this thread.

i blame b-j auctions because the individuals who bid on these vehicles have more money than all the members on this board put together. When you have such huge amounts of money, you can afford to pay outrageous prices for a vehicle just so the bidder's can have the prideful (in most cases alcoholic induced) satisfaction that they won a competition against another bidder.

because b-j auctions' bidders are the financial elite of this hobby, the prices that they can afford to pay are not truly indicative of the value of the cars, but rather an inflated appraisal based upon the motivations of getting attention, tv time, and competition between other rich people.

just the way i see it though.
