I'm looking at 2 1970 Plymouths. Both are partially restored but still need a lot of work. The question is how do I tell if they are a GTX or Road Runner? The hoods have been changed, the interiors look the same and are missing some items, all of the body molding and bumpers are off (can't tell which goes to which). I decoded the VIN and body tags on both but they were no help. There are some clues but I am concerned that changes may have been made in the past. Some VIN decoders call them a GTX and others a Road Runner. The VIN on both are RS23U0C (Belvedere/ Satellite, Special Class, 440 engine, 1970, Jefferson MI plant.

Both have bucket seats and consoles. Both are automatics with the 440 engine. I don't trust the holes for the badging. Thanks in advance for the help.

Thanks

Thanks all. None of my books (including Galen's) list which is which. I forgot to mention that one does not have a console. The gear selector is on the column. The other is also missing the engine and transmission and the first one has what looks like a 440 but is blue! They are part of a divorce case so it will be some time before their status is determined. He may buy out her share and keep them or sell them. Neither has had work done in several years. Fortunately, both are stored in a heated garage. All I need is patience!

Welcome - let us know what you end up with!

U code is single 4 barrel 440 engine and i dont think the Roadrunner ever came as a U code. Both should be GTX's

Were in CT are you ? Perhaps I could help you out ?

In 70, 440 was an option in Road Runners. But those are both GTX's. Serial # should be RS23UOXXXXXXX, unless it's a Hemi or six pack car. If either are that special, then you're looking at a V or R code instead of a U. If you want to be extra sure, check the radiator support between the radiator and the back, at the top, and there will be a stamped VIN there that should match the VIN on the dash. Some GTX;s did come with column shifts.

Unless the OP made a typo, I don't believe they built any GTXs at the "C" Jefferson plant or any B bodies for that matter.

no U code 70 road runners unless they had the nose cone and big wing on the back .

Yep, the 440 was exclusive to the GTX (reserved for the "boss") until mid '69 for the special package cars A12's or M codes...and Superbird. No "standard " road runners had a 440 option.

Often the "G" for St. Louis plant, doesn't have a full 'tail' so it looks like a "C". As there were no B bodies built at the Jefferson plant, this has to be a "G".

Yes, but I didn't make that assumption since the OP didn't post a picture of either the V.I.N. plate or the fender tag, only LISTING the V.I.N. I have never seen a V.I.N. plate with that problem only the fender tag stamping.

RS23 is GTX only....You may have found a small gold mine!!!!
Petty Blue 67 gtX

I found a Charger 2 weeks ago with 2 "G's" looking like they were a "C".... had me scratching my head for a minute when I decoded it lol

A RS code can be Sport Satellite also, BUT not with a U code for the engine.

John

Sport Satellite is RP23 if it is RS23 it is a GTX no doubt.
