I need help identifying this rear end. It looks to me like an 8-3/4 but i dont recognize the casting numbers and cant find any mention of them online. It's out of my dad's 1950 Dodge B2C 3/4 ton pickup. I know the 8-3/4 was introduced 1957 but was thinking either someone swapped it in at some time in the past or this is some other assembly tht I never heard of.

Reason I am asking is the truck maxes out at like 45 to 50 mph and he was thinking about swapping in some taller gears.

Here are some pictures of the truck - it's totally original and he's only the 2nd owner (some if you may have seen it for sale online a few months ago). sweet truck. i also posted pics of the housing and several angles on the casting numbers.

Thanks,

Dan

It looks like an 8 3/4 to me too but I also do not recognize the casting numbers. Somebody with a book or a few more gray hairs will need to answer this one.

Does it have a granny 4 spd? That's more likely why it only runs 45 mph! They weren't built for hwy. use really just country rds.

Yup, has the 4spd w the granny 1st gear. Yeah, the truck was a farm truck for sure, but if we could figure out what it has, it might be as easy as swapping out the 4.10 gear it has right now for a 3.23 or something like that so it could be a bit more street friendly.

Thanks, guys. Yeah, the truck is awesome. Runs like a top. His 1st car was a '49 dodge truck just like this one. Seems that the rear is an old school 40's and early 50's job that is similar to the 8-3/4 in looks and general build (gear assembly in the removable center section) but is totally unrelated parts wise.

I can only say what I did on my 51. I have a B3B. Swapped the entire diff from a B-Body, think it was a 72. Allowed me to change out the brakes to more modern, swap in 3.23 gear set, and now have the parking brake at the rear axle instead of the back of the transmission.
To do the job, pulled the rear from the truck, cut mounts from the b-body, cut and mounted axle mounts from the 51, little time welding and back in business.
Long stroke on the six will keep you from RPM. 4-5/8 stroke is a long throw but torque is good.
BTW, also went with a 85 diplomat torsion bar and cradle on the front. Nice ride, disc brakes, and adjustable ride height. Fits just outside the frame rails.

He hasn't been on in a couple years
The bearings should be the same as regular 8 3/4s . The bearings and cups should have #s on them that can be cross referenced. Is it apart
