Bought a car with a very poor paint job. Since it will be impossible to color match, I want to remove the red paint, and retain the metal finish on the gas cap.

What process is recommended to minimize damage? Thanks!

A chemical stripper (your brand of choice),
I have no real recommendations on brands
& then neutralize what ever it is that you used, before you go forward
& then, do like a 000 Steelwood buff, maybe clear it after, so it doesn't tarnish or rust
I don't know if that is stainless or not

gas cap can go into a blast cabinet........ "aircraft stripper" is my go to for things that cannot be blasted
