Ignition Switch Removal - '71 Coronet

So I'm looking to change out my ignition switch after my
other one burnt out. I got the steering wheel off, but
there seems to be a ball bearing in place holding the
rest of the steering wheel on keeping me from getting to
the switch I need to replace. I done some looking online
and most are saying you gotta disconnect the steering
column itself from the gearbox just to get the rest of it
off to change out the switch. I was wondering if anyone had
any experience with this and if there is a simpler way? I can post some pictures when I get home for the visual types.

Pull the turn signal switch
Under that there is a small hole that you will
Have to put a paper clip in and push on it
While you wiggle the switch out.
You also need to have the key in the switch
While you work the paper clip..

As I understand this, the op is having trouble getting access to the ignition switch/lock. The upper column head housing needs to come off along with the turn signal switch and shaft bearing. The snap ring on the steering shaft needs to be removed, remove three screws holding the upper housing the middle housing. The shaft bearing should slide off the shaft with the upper housing and t-signal switch. Will then find a lock plate on the shaft that will need to be removed, roll pin hidden/retained behind a slip collar. At this point you should have access to the ignition switch and or lock. The entire column does not need to be removed.

This may help to get it apart. This is on my 72 Coronet. If you need pictures on how I pulled the shaft through the collar reassembly I can post those to.

So far mine is absolutely stuck. Tried making a plumbers tape puller like yours and not even a budge.
