hi guys,,,,hows it goin' ? got another question for ya. I bought a set of "keyed alike" door lock cylinders, and ignition switch. (the one ya start the car with ). the door cylinders are in and im waiting on the linkage from 6 pack2go to complete that part of it. Now its time to get into the steering column and replace the ignition switch. i have never done this before and im wondering if this can be done by a 3rd grader ? what im trying to ask is can i do this myself?....do i need "specialty tools"?... whats all involved in this undertaking? i have a shop manual on CD but its not getting into the logistixxxxxxxxxxxxxx .!

theres a pin u push in while u turn the key and it slides out. look closely on ign switch assy and u will see. a paper clip worked for me on my 66

Read the instructions thoroughly and follow them to the letter! What happens when you don't? Years ago I replaced an ignition switch on a 68 Fairlane. Very simple, easy procedure. Since I didn't read instructions I forgot to disconnect the battery cable first. The minute the switch was installed there was a hissing, sizzling sound. There was a ton of smoke pouring from the hood area and under the dash as the wiring harness starting circuit fried itself up. What are the odds of finding a wiring harness for a 1968 Fairlane intact at a local junkyard? Fortunately for me I found one, had to pay over $100.00 for it.

thanx for the help guys....ill tackle this when it gets warmer !

It's easy to replace the ignition on the early cars but not so easy on the column mounted switches. What are you working on? You mentioned column.....a 66 B body is about as easy as they get! Well, just about any of the dash mounted switches are easy.
