I am looking to install a tach in the dash on my '69 RR. It does not currently have one, just the blank space. My question is; can this be done without taking the entire dash out? I am not really seeing an easy way to do this. Has anyone done this?
Thanks for your time.

I would think the cluster needs to come out.

Either dash you have to remove and take apart. Remember when you install new tach if you have a dash speaker you will have to insulate/isolate speaker to prevent the magnet from distorting the tach needle when you turn on the switch.

Thanks for the heads up. I thought as much. The magnets are pretty strong and I figured that would be likely due to the proximity to the tach.

WHAT WOULD YOU USE TO ISOLATE THE FRONT SPEAKER FROM TAC?

I believe there is some confusion here.
I've removed and re-installed my instrument cluster at least four times without having to remove the dash. It is a rallye but I highly doubt it would be any different for the standard cluster. In fact, for service at the dealership, it wouldn't make any sense. In order to remove the dash you have to remove the windshield.

That was part of my original question. It doesn't look too hard to take out. Is that correct?

Exactly. It takes me about 10 minutes to remove now that I've had some practice. Should take about half an hour the first time. Getting it back in is a bit more of a struggle but simply take your time and don't get frustrated.
Do you have a Factory Service Manual?

Sorry my reply was incorrect. I meant you do have to remove the cluster not the dash the glass has to be separated from the cluster. It is not easy but if you are patient can be done.

thanks, how did you use the foil.did you wrap speaker with it or how? thanks
I will likely use it on both sides. I haven't installed the tach yet. I have used similar products to shield telephone systems from EMF and Magnetics in the past. I had read about the magnets from the front speaker interfering with the tach. I have a dual-cone speaker in the front on mine, so I expect it will interfere.

I used foil. Also have the dual kenwood speaker which pulled my tach to 400 upon switching the igniton on.

i installed mine in the car. it wasn't that difficult but it was about 10 years ago.
