Going from points to electronic ignition Is your power in to the ballast resistor. Would that be key power? To run the new coil off of the new coil????

Sounds right. Let us know which ignition system and someone will post schematics and more info...

MSD distributor and coil . Can I pick up key power from the ballist resistor supply wire?

Is that a "all-in-one" distributor? You would want to connect the start and run wires at the ballast resistor together and use the run wire (I think Blue.)
I think with most aftermarket ignition (except stock type) the ballast resistor is not used. You will need to connect the start wire to the run wires. You can use a wire jumper across the ballast resistor if you want a stock look. Without the jumper the engine may not want to start until you release the key from start to run.

Yes it is an all in one distributor. Waiting for the distributor and coil to come in. Wanted to get a head start on trying to figure out how the wiring went. I looked up the wiring diagram that went with the distributor . Hard part was figuring out where to tie it in at. The directions had just said go to key power.

451 is correct. You will typically remove the ballast resistor and connect BOTH the blue (run) & brown (start) wire that comes out of the bulkhead disconnect plug and goes into the ballast resistor. I believe you run the big red wire from the MSD box directly to the battery too.

I do recall that on the MSD-6A instructions, it's a little confusing. I had to basically "mix" wiring diagrams from the MSD instructions and the factory service manual. There's only 5-6 wires, so it's not too tough. I think combining the brown/blue wires from the factory harness was the confusing part if I recall correctly.

Once you jumper the ballast resistor (or connect both wires together at the ballast resistor) just connect the MSD to the ignition coil like in figure 10 of the install instructions.

it is a all-in-one, not a MSD CD box, but if they are using the all-in-one to trigger an external MSD CD box like a 6AL, then the wiring is different as in figure 11 of install instructions.
