The application is my '65 Dodge Coronet 383/727, and [soon to be] 4.11 rear.

-Has anyone had experience with the Weiand Action Plus manifold,
part. # 8008]?...I am wondering about low end torque and throttle response.

-Can anyone offer a comparison between this manifold and the [now discontinued] Edelbrock DP4B.

-In your opinion, which Edelbrock intake that is currently offered would the Weiand intake compare to?

You may want to try and find that Weiand manifold first. I scouted around before settling on the Performer RPM.

I can find the Weiand intake. I called Edelbrock and ask the tech about what he would compare [in their current product offering] the DP4B intake to. he said te Edelbrock Performer, not the Performer RPm...
At this point in my "hunt" I am gathering opinions from you folks, the experts on intakes and carb recommendations [see some of my other posts]. Gathering such information will really improve my odds in making the CORRECT choices.
 
Not really answering your question here......but with 4.10 gears (assuming no overdrive), your engine won't every be in "low end", so I think you'll want to look at an intake for mid-range to top-end only (like a single plane).

If you do have overdrive, disregard this post.

I have a Weiand on my Charger, not sure if it's an action plus. But it was definitely a step above the stock iron, yes it has very good low end.
 
Always use caution when looking at magazine articles. Not that they are necessarily wrong or misguided, but be sure to approach what they present with a bit of skepticism and sharp eye to what they say, and don't say.

My take away between my personnel observation, and pretty much supported by that article is that the Performer, DP4B and Weiand are about a wash, and probably a good choice for 90% of the street 383 applications (i.e. <400 hp). The slight power differences between the three in the article may, or may nor be due to the manifold itself, and possibly due to other dyno/test day variabilities as well. I do like those two articles.
 
Those are both EXCELLENT sources of information & I believe both tests were set up well. To be fair, BSB67 is correct though...maybe call each test +/- 5hp or something and go from there. If there's one intake making +10hp and your motor setup is roughly the same...pick that one. The first article had a HUGE cam in it with iron heads. Anyway, if two intakes are within, say 3hp of each other, then call them "equal".
 
I am for the use of the single plane intake. If you want rpms go with a larger exhaust if you want more torque keep the exhaust smaller. With 4:10s and 1:1 gear 3400 rpm will be the norm.
 
I had the Action Plus on my 400, But it had 3.23 gears and work great, but I would not put it on any engine with low gears, as it will quickly be out of it power band. I later put the Torqer II with 3.55 gears, which paired better.
 
I have a regular Performer dual plane on my 383 4 speed car with a 4779 dp carb 3.91 gear. Full street trim (G 70 14 tires) it will run in the high 12s. I shift at 6500 rpm, but it'll go 7000. In second gear at 30 mph, it'll go sideways and the tires don't stop spinning until I grab 3rd gear. Can't prove it, but I doubt a single plane intake would help this motor at any level.

Had the DP4B on it before the Performer. Ran the same. I suspect that the Weiand would run about the same too.
 
Geez, I wish.... I'm pulling about 4000 rpm on the highway with just 3.91's....cruising in the slow lane.


I pull about 3300 rpm at 65 mph with a fairly small tire. Either you're driving 75 in the slow lane, your torque converter is junk, or your speedo or tach are off.

26.5" tire, 3.91 gears & 4000rpm is about 81mph.....at a 70mph speed limit, especially in Chicago, 81mph is the slow lane. And a manual transmission, fyi. It's kind of hard to think about driving several hundred miles at 4-grand.

Why

For me it was all about Torque , off idle

I knew my motor on the street , the build I put together , Max HP and Torque would all fall under 5500 Rpms based on most Dyno s I have seen

I wanted to run the RPM but was concerned about the factory one piece kick down linkage , hood clearance (Running the factory dual snorkel was mandatory for me) and coil location etc.

How much am I leaving on the table running the Weiand versus RPM below 5500 Rpms ?

Anyways the Weiand works for everything mentioned

Off idle performance is incredible , well anything below 20-30 mph I can’t keep the 275-60 s hooked up period , will destroy the tires off idle until I lift on the pedal

And I run a pretty tight mostly stock rebuilt torque converter with factory 3:91 Sure Grip
Turbo action valve body in my rebuilt numbers transmission
