I changed the pan on my GTX today...Got the pan and the windage tray off...On a close inspection I noticed that it had a cast crank...Lots of custom work done to it..Including welding on the crank(yes welding!)And crazy stuff to balance it out...Holes drilled,Counter weights trimmed to fin like...Anyone ever seen this before???I,d post picks as soon as I figure that out>>>

it can be done, but most people do not bother. a well balanced engine does increase longevity and performance.... just that not too many people do it with cast cranks opposed to forged ones.

I have a 75 440 in the garage with a cast crank. The balancer is different than a forged crank balancer. Tapers front to back instead of flat square edged, also says for cast crank only. I have a 4 speed and need a balanced flywheel at $500 a pop if I want to use it.

The cast cranks are externally balanced because there isn't enough mass on the counterweights at that radius to balance out. Must be a difference in the density of the materials - forged vs. steel. If you have welding on the far ends my guess is someone used mallory metal (heavy metal) to increase the mass of the counterweights so you can run a zero balance flywheel. Knife edging the crank is good to keep oil off it at high RPM but from a balance standpoint it makes matters worse because you are removing weight when you want to add. No matter what, if done properly, it should be just fine the way it is so I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh yeah, to post pics you first have to do "add reply" (not quick reply) then look for the paper clip on top of the window. Click on that and you will have another window pop up that has five boxes that say BROWSE. When you click on those you will see your computer files and you should be able to find your pictures in there. If they don't load the pictures are probably too big and need to be re sized.

Yes, cast cranks are lighter than forged....

I internally balanced the MP 4" cast crank in my 340. It IS lighter than a forged crank and spins up very quick.
