Is it better to install the trunk lid spring with the hinges up?

Here you go. The 1/2 pipe that hook into the spring are 1" and I think smaller would work just as well. The notch is about 3/8".

Love that tool! 20+years ago when I had one break it took me and a buddy with some stout wire and turnbuckles to ease the new one in.

No one lost an eye and the trunk still worked fine when I sold it a few years back.

Took twenty minutes to fab the tool out of scraps. Two minutes to adjust the springs. It actually took me longer to get this ol' body into and out of the trunk to adjust them !!

I can remove mine by hand now. I mistakenly forgot about spring clearance when I bent up the fuel lines (and did not want to redesign them) so, necessity is the mother of invention!
