Is it normal to take your project car to a local show?

Nicely said :) I have noticed guys who don't do there own work run around here like they are true car nuts got a 70 gto right next door he bought after a restoration and talks to me like he has been building cars for years lol...

i say sure thake your projects, we need to prove that we build them ourselves, i've seen too many guys with deep pockets that find their dream car, fork out the big bucks and have it sent to every shop in town to get it tricked out and then call themselves car guys, we have a local coffee cruise where the rich folks go to the dealer and but a brand new porsche or MBZ drag it to the show and call eachother car guys... when i roll out my original max wedge i don't even wipe the dirt off and they call it a piece of crap, little do they know my dirty piece of crap is worth more than their shinny piece of crap anyday...

Take it man. I took mine through the whole process. It's nice when you are almost done and someone who has seen it before says " that isn't the same car, is it?"
Go for it!

I think I'm going to take my GTX to this big MOPAR show in S.A. this fall, you are right, projects will draw far more of a crowd than 'done' and shiny new and perfect cars.

When I was putting my 66 together I drove it to local car shows with just the front seat. No carpet, backseat or headliner. People commented on how nice the floorpans were. lol

looks ok to me..a nice driver......tune up and turn on.
I like it.

I'd rather take a beat up project Mopar to a show than be seen in near perfect Ford ;) lol
Take it and go have fun!!!

My 66 Bel has been to a few parking lot shows and is sporting faded worn off paint and showing primer and surface rust, a rusted out lower rear quarter and rip and roll interior. People still love it and one guy tried to buy it. Fact is I see a lot of partially completed cars at shows.

Hey Phil, I don't understand. That's about the shiniest I have ever seen your 64. :happy7:

I have actually had a project car rejected from a show... had to park in the parking lot no lie... =-( oh well

Nice looking Runner!

I say take it. I usually spend more time looking at the daily drivers and project cars than I do at the perfect right off the showroom floor (and off the trailer) restorations.

My local car club has a class for unfinished cars at some of the shows. I actually like looking at the rough cars more than the finished one sometimes. I'd say bring it and have fun.

Wow, so if a guy finds his dream car, yet doesn't have the ability in bodywork to get it restored to where it deserves to be so he pays to have it done at a bodyshop, or doesn't have the engine know how to rebuild/ build a performance engine so he has a shop do it for him, he's not a car guy? Sorry, but LMAO. I agree that the OP should take it and show it and be proud of it, but not to "prove he's building it himself". That's ignorant. You don't have to have the ability to do every single thing on a car to be a "car guy". People with that mentality are what hurts the car show scene, as well as the racing scene. Why not congratulate the guy on how great his car looks, rather then downing him for paying someone to do the work the right way? BTW, I have been a "car guy" since I was tall enough to stand on a milk crate and look over the fender while my Dad worked on an engine, I have two gorgeous Mopars that I have done alot of the work on, but have also paid someone to do the work I'm not able to because I want it to be perfect when it's done.

I would tend to agree with Mark42202, I do most if not all my own work on all my projects except upholstery work & spraying custom paint , I can do decent paint job, but custom jobs I do the dis-assembly, body work, sanding, assembly, grunt work & let the pros do the paint.. I try to do every thing else short of machine work that I don't have the machinery or equipment to do it... I don't be grudge a guy for paying someone else to do their car, I have built a bunch of cars for others that helped me support my racing habit, I don't think they have the same amount of pride in their projects as the guy who builds his own, but they are out there supporting the hobby, metal suppliers, parts suppliers, machine shops, restoration & fabrication/welding shops etc. with their dollars... I've never been a big show car guy more of a racer or a street squirrel that will sometimes show my car, they never seem to be done, maybe that's were I get my thinking... I've been around cars since I was able to walk pretty much, I'm 52 now... My step father Bob taught me a bunch about cars, go-carts, mini bikes, bicycles & motorcycles, before I went crazy with the hobby & learned a bunch of fab & engine skills by doing it & making many mistakes along the way, that someone who was a professional probably wouldn't have mad, but I learned from it... I would say take your car finished or not & be proud... Just my opinion & you know what they say about opinions they are like a-holes everyone has 1....

I do most of my own work but i don't have anything against someone paying for his car to be built,i think what some of these guys are saying is when they go to shows and they pass it off as they did it themselves those are the guys i hate. If you did nothing except shell out cash to have your dream car give credit where credit is due drop the names of the fellas or shop that did the work, you would be giving them the respect they deserve and maybe some work. Taking credit for the work you did not do is disrespectful and beleve it or not us real car guys can tell your full of crap.Of course take your car to shows who cares what others think, you might be suprised the folks that take a look and the comments you may get.I take my barracuda to shows and have had judges overheard saying don't look at that P.O.S. we got other cars to judge yes i was pissed but i got over it. I'm very proud of what i have and love showing it off.

Anyone who does there own work should be proud over it, its hard and its time consuming.. Most don't start out as "pretty". If people go to a show and tell everyone they did it all wouldn't it be something if a guy from the shop who worked on the car was there and heard it. I don't imagine he would keep quiet over someone taking his credit. I do all my cars and im far from a pro, but i like it and its something i can look back on, even if not perfect. You have a nice looking Barracuda there!
