Is it possible to identify 18 or 23 spline with trans in car?

First I should say that I'm manual trans challenged, so forgive the noobish questions...

I need to order a clutch, pilot bearing and throwout bearing for my 69 RR, 383 with an 833. I want to order all the parts before taking it off the road, but it looks like I need to know spline count and clutch dia (11" or 10.5").... The previous owner did many things that would lead me to not want to assume it is set-up like it would be from the factory (11" and 23 spline?).

Is it possible to confirm without removing the tranny? Any other specifics I need to know before ordering the parts I mentioned above?

Thanks in advance

I was in the same boat as you..PO...slipshod work, etc, etc, so I ended up pulling it just to be safe. Ordered all I needed from Summit and had the parts needed quicker than I was able to get the flywheel back from the machine shop. Never was able to 'figure it out' until I yanked everything.

How long did it take to get your flywheel back? I can have them finished in less than 20 min, 10 minutes if they are just flat.

Pull your old one out first......Mopar had 11 inch clutches that wern't really 11 inch clutches///they were 10.85 inch clutches...so a 11 inch wont fit......the 10.85 clutches use a 10.5 in bolt patern to instal....not a 11 inch pattern. Might save alot of trips to the parts store if you have it inhand first...

Thanks for the replies... Looks like I'll need to yank it to find out what's what.

It took about a day. Dropped it off one night and picked it up the next night. If you were a bit closer, I'd just use your services ;-)

If you have a two piece bell housing you can take the lower cover off and look up there at the TO bearing area. Maybe there you will see a distinguishing feature like the TO bearing sleeve and bearing or even the bearing retainer.
