is there a vin # on a 1978 360 engine?

Does anyone know if theres a VIN # stamped anywhere on a 1978 360 engine? Or, can anyone tell me how to find out what kind of vehicle the engine came out of? If I cant find this info out, then what do I tell the auto parts store when I go to get a rebuild kit for it since they will ask me what year, or will it matter? thanks

Full VIN's were only on 69 engines (and I think it was just for BB, not SB... but not sure). Maybe a small block guy can chime in to give more info.

My '68 Satellite currently has a 360 SB in it that originally came out of a '78 motorhome. The previous owner had swapped it in place of the original 318. I've replaced a ton of parts on it like ignition, pumps, belts, etc. and every time I go in I just tell the parts guy that I need parts from a

'78 Dodge D100 truck

So far so good and all the parts have fit and worked every time except one. That one time was the water pump. It turned out that after I saw that the 360 water pump was not the same as what I had, I asked him for one for a 318. It was a perfect match. Either some parts are interchangeable for both 318 and 360 and the parts log only had room to enter one of those in the system or when the part was placed in the parts system it was logged incorrectly.

For most engine parts you order online you don't need to know the year of the vehicle it came out of - just need to know if it's Small Block, Big Block B or RB and that's it's Chrysler or Mopar. I know the parts counter can be a hastle sometimes though. Their system ties their hands and they have never looked something up for me without knowing a year, make and model.

Can't wait to get that SB out of mine. Got a 451 in the works.

About your original VIN question - I did find an identifying # on my 360 heads, but have never located a block VIN #.
