It is 5:00 central, I am in the hospital after some elective surgery.

Had a date with the surgeon here in Des Moines Friday am.
Had to have a procedure done for my non cancerous ( thank God) enlarged prostate.
Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure that removes part of the prostate . I am sure other members have road this ride and my hat is off to you.

They go to work early here on day 2 , Good morning, blood draw at 3:30, Check vitals at 4:00 am , 4:15 new 2 liter bag of saline flush. LMAO.
They have ran at least 6 of those bags through my catheter and blader since surgery.
Right after surgery and I was in my room I experienced my 1st blood clot that would not pass.
That ranks right up there on the old pain meter , a solid 5 out of 10 I would give it.
That was resolved with a back flush of some brand of brake clean
But did the trick . 5th floor and I'm counting bed sheets.

Thank you Ed, Yes I am following directions and have had some great nurses and aids.
Possible discharge this afternoon if bleeding is controlled. If not ,looking at Sunday.
Took 3 hallway walks yesterday eve. More today.

Then, during a follow up exam, one of his associates asked me why had the procedure done, because the pain I was having in my prostrate wouldn’t be stopped by the TURP. I asked him why one his associates even suggested it in the first place, before I stormed out of his office. I get blood clots in it now about twice a year from this unnecessary procedure. It did nothing good for me.

I hope that yours gets you to where you wanted to be!

Get well soon brother. Been there done that. Only mine was treated with radiation. It was rough, kinda wish they would have done the surgery and been done with it. Either way is all sucks. Prayers coming your way.

Sorry yours didn't go good.
Time will tell with me. I had got to the point of being tuff to pee , then 5 minutes later having to go again.
Both of my brothers have had prostate cancer treated with removal of their prostrate. I passed my 2 biopsies but had other problems , needed some relief.

I had the TURP done in August.

After being on Flomax for two years it wasn't working like it did at first. Then I was experiencing lightheadedness and lower blood pressure. After experimenting with which medication I was taking that was causing it, turned out to be the Flomax. Stopped taking it and by the third day I couldn't pee. Lightheadedness and low BP was gone, just couldn't go. So back on the Flomax and off to the urologist for consolation. Set up an appointment for surgery in August.

At the hospital they had me prepped but the Dr's first surgery was taking longer than planned. Finally they wheeled me into surgery. As normal I don't remember anything after that.

Woke up in recovery with a catheter. Wasn't feeling too much pain at the moment. An hour later the Urologist stops by to check on me. Everything went well. He said I could take the catheter out at home the next day with instructions on how to do it by the nurse before I leave or I could wait until Monday and stop by the office. They called my friend to let her know I was ready to go home.

When I got home I guess the anesthesia was really wearing off and that catheter was really starting to hurt. Constantly feeling like I had to go with no relief. Took a Tylenol, drank two glasses of water, emptied the catheter bag and went to bed.

Next morning I got up and I just couldn't wait to get that catheter out. What a relief to finally get rid of that thing. I think it was the worst thing about the whole ordeal.

For the next five to seven days it was almost a constant feeling of having to go. Drinking lots of water and some Kegel exercises help. I went back to work the next week and the urgency to go was still there but I could control it. By the third week everything was getting back to normal and hey, I was peeing without any meds!

I asked my urologist why I'm reading about people having the TURP procedure and the hospital keeps them for a day or two? He stated that he is using a little different procedure that doesn't require you to stay over. It's a quicker recovery also. He was right. Wish I had it done sooner. Today I have no side effects whatsoever and things are back to normal.

@1967coronet It takes a little time but it gets better before you know it. Drink nothing but water and lots of it. One cup of coffee will burn pretty good or anything spicy that you eat. Just be thoughtful of what you take in. Stool softener is a must! Taking walks help. Get well soon!

Get well soon. I’ve been to the hospital a couple times myself this year. Never fun. The human body is definitely complex and still not well understood. If everything was as fun and simple as working on a B-body we would all be in good shape. Wishing a speedy recovery.
