Jacking up '69 GTX

I need to explore the underside of my car but I am worried about jacking it up to get it on the stands. Should I lift the rear at the differential? What about the front? I've only had the car since winter so it is still new to me. Any advice?
 
Hi ,there was an article how to jack up your car here onBBo this week ,you may have to do a little searching but it will be worth it
 
It will work fine if you put the jack under the differential, then under the K Member and use 4 jackstands on the corners of the car.
 
Whatever you do, please don't forget to add railway ties or some sort of backup for the floor jacks. I have been called to too many cases of guys who figured the jacks would hold.

If you are going to be under the car a fair bit, 2-foot sections of stacked railway ties will catch and hold the car above you if the jacks fail.

I lost a family member due to something like this. He must have hit something inside the truck and knocked out of gear and it rolled back and fell on him. He just had the truck lifted in the front.

I for one do not trust jack stands at all. I will put the car on them to do some work but I will not crawl under it while on it.

I would build a body dolly or buy one or a lift.
 
One thing I can gaurantee you all. Concrete blocks, or cinder blocks as you may call them, are NOT to be used to hold a car. They are not designed to hold a point load of any sort.

It's time to design a solid timber back-up block to go with our jack stands.
 
I block the wheels, use good quality jack stands rated well above the load I put on them, and leave the hydraulic lift jack in place as a backup. Also a good idea to let someone know you are under there, and to have them either within earshot, or periodically checking up on you if possible.
 
I seem to be the only person in this thread that has pictures of their rides. What's up with that? Or am I doing something wrong?
 
If I remove a tire, then I throw it under the car as a last resort in case the jack stands fail. Or if there is an earth quake while I'm under there! Lol. Almost had a RR fall on me when I was 20. Had it on a bumper jack only on a sloping driveway in park. (DUMB MOVE) So took the front tire off, just to check some thing. Accidently knocked it out of gear, while under it. Shoved it back into gear but the auto started clicking and I got out of the way like a second before it dropped onto the brake drum and rolled down the D Way. Now I always use jack stands, and also leave the hyd jack under there for added safety. Be Safe!
