I just got a clutch style sure grip and I'll be installing it in a open 489 case. Besides just the sure grip unit do I need the seller to include any other hardware or anything like that?
Ever done one before? I did a couple back in high school. I got a couple open 2.94's I'd like to make SG 3.73's, so I guess I'll try to get my "mojo" back.
Let us know how it goes.
There's an article in Mopar Muscle, but it doesn't really go into the proper detail.
I don't have the skillset or the tools to do it myself so the rear end...after I powdercoat it will be going to a shop. I just wanted to make sure I get everything off the seller that I'll need to do the swap. I wasn't sure if bolts and all that type stuff would be the same in what I already have. I'm pretty sure it is since that mopar muscle article you are referring to doesn't mention anything.
Make sure the axle thrust buttons are in the center. Look inside the hole where the axle goes. If you see a small hole all the way through to the other side you don't have the buttons installed. Also make sure the two sets of splines are lined up. No big deal if they are not, but you will have to loosen the bolts that hold the unit together so you can move the side gear to line them up again. Tighten the carrier bolts with both axle in place and fully seated. By the way these bolts are left hand thread and if you need new ones they are $10.00 each!
Thanks for the advise Meep. I'll be leaving all that stuff to the pros I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything to be able to swap a sure grip into my open center. It sounds like all I need is the actually sure grip unit and everything else will already be in my open pumpkin. Thanks for all the help.
Do these 'pros' know Mopars? I've seen a lot of rears that were worked on by 'pros' that were not right. I also like to take them apart to check for any problems that might be hiding inside but I also made a set of checking tools to see if they still have any grab before buying when I used to go to swap meets a lot....
I guess they know Mopars. They are highly recommended by most out here in Utah. That's a pretty nifty tool you got there. Is that the only way to check to see if the sure grip is good. I was thinking to just rebuild it anyhow so I know it's good.
