First; i don't know if this is the appropriate forum to ask, please move to where it's relevant. :asskiss:

i have spare K-frame for my 69' charger. i wanted to modify it (of course). I'm curious if anyone has ideas , proven mods or suggestions? Nothing much listed in my Shelby speed secrets books or racing chassis books that i can see.

what's worth the effort, what's worked?

lighter weight , gussets , reweld seams , notch it out for more oil pan clearance , add skid plate like hemi k-frames. just some ideas I'm mulling over while staring at it in the garage. Thought I'd ask the community for your brilliance.

Weld fender washers over the ends of the tubes that the LCA studs go through or at least inspect the welds and make sure there are no cracks.

I drilled 1 1/2" holes in the front of mine to cut weight. Looks kinda neat too!

Drag racing? Making it light? Oil pan clearance? Street use? Yes. That I can help you. Road race stuff, no. Start by hole sawing the inner corners. Then bend 2 over size l shapes. Trim the in the middle. Don't worry if they're to tall /low/long. Tack weld and trim to size. You can trim all the flanges. Trim a little then tack as you go. The motor mount brackets can get whacked if you use a motor plate. even part of the steering box mount can be tubeing (Drag Race only) Dont forget the tie down hooks. Then finish weld. Metal finish if you like it nice.

Doug, did to you drill through for the tow hook or just weld to the "K"? I would like to add 3 hoops to my "K"

Drilled it thru. And drilled up thru from the bottom as well.

On the 70 unit I'm putting in my 65, I went with adding 120+ plug welds to it[ only had 30 or so factory] with reinforcements added to the lower control arm/strut rod attachment/idler arm mount and other areas. Added a skid plate. Still need to work on the areas around the steering box mount and the engine mounts. My quest is to auto x, track events, twisty road fun and some drags. I wanted more rigidity out of the unit.

THAT will be stiff, like Ron Jeremy stiff ;)
i noticed you're not using a jig frame at all, not concerned about it warping with all the heat ? or is that just a waste of time?

DVW - did you use a jig at all when modifying yours ?

RE: oil pan cut out and boxing it (like DVW's below ) I wonder how rigid this is in comparison to the OEM? i can see how it works well in drag / straight track aspects, it's boxed in , lighter , etc. but is it better (rigidity wise) them OEM ?

:thankyou:

I welded it when it was bolted to the rails. For sure its no more rigid with the cut. But th eoil pan removal is a breeze. Solid welding the edges sure would help. Motor plate helps stiffen the upper side of the rail. Late thru bolt idler arm is better. Stiffer mounting of the gear box would be better. It is plenty stiff to withstand 8 years (650+ passes) worth of wheel stands.

I didn't use a jig when welding, just bounced around randomly. Fits up to the rails fine.

DVW - understood.

got my K-frame back from the sand blaster , cant wait to wreck it !

I done a lot of work on my 68RR k frame after it was cleaned up. I welded all the edges so it was solid. I also welded supports in around the steering box mount. I have not got to install it yet as I an going to put motor, trany and suspension all together then install from bottom. Just a suggestion.

Never posted final pics
turned out great IMO and happy with the results. installation soon.

Made my own plates and boxed in everything i could. cut off all the plug welded lips and seem welded them.
My brother in law does ToD's so he has buckets of large washers i welded around strut rod supports and LCA holes. Also Added tow hooks then powder coated black.
