Killer $75 new ignition system...GM module. I already hear the screams!

I bought a Pertronix 6ohm coil and an AC Delco ignition module and going to try this upgrade. I have already gutted an old Mopar style Echlin ignition module to hide the GM module in. The car is a mostly stock '66 Coronet with a 383. Next month I'll take the car to the track to get a baseline on performance then go back after the upgrade to see if there is a improvement.

Curious minds want to know the answer. (or nosy a person)

This sounds like something I'd like to try. What coil did you use - I'm not familiar with the difference between what I have now and an 'e-core' type. Also, where did you get the aluminum collar?

Here’s the bracket and coil I used. I used a small piece of aluminum to bolt to the bracket and attach the module.

Is there any particular year GM ignition module you ask for at the auto parts store? Do I just go in and say, I need an ignition module for a 1980 Camaro 350 engine? Would that work?

Anybody use Pertronix HEI module with the rev limiter? Thinking of using that module with a Pertronix flame thrower E-core coil. There are 3 similar coils all 60,000 volts but 3 different ohm ratings, 0.30 ohms, 0.32 ohms and 0.45 ohms what is the difference?

Ive always stuck with the OEM GM Modules on Amazon. They run about 35 bucks. The quality on the others are very questionable… All made in China.

Step one,
Took the car to the track last Friday to get a baseline on performance. There were nearly 400 cars there so I only got 2 passes in. There was no time for any tuning, so I'll try to get some in next month now that I know what to expect. Not sure how impressive or un-impressive these numbers are - you be the judge.
The Density Altitude was roughly 3600ft - I made the passes in drive and let the trans shift automatically.
1st pass - 15.59@88 mph
2nd pass - 15.66@88 mph

The car is a '66 Coronet 440 convertible factory 383 4bbl automatic, power steering and brakes, 3.23 limited slip diff. Not sure what the actual weight is of the car but I'm guessing between 3600-3800. In street tune and stuff in the trunk. My dad built the motor way back in 1979 it's a stock bottom end with slight overbore and windage tray. Stock '62 383/413 heads, stock '68 440 magnum cam, stock '68-'69 intake with Edelbrock 800 cfm carb. Ignition system is Chrysler electronic w/orange box. '68-'69 HP exhaust manifolds and TTI 3inch exhaust system. Trans has a shift kit and a stock 12 inch convertor (way too tight too) Kind of a pig out of the whole but when the secondarys open up it just barely breaks the tires loose on the street.

Next month I'll do an update - maybe I should start a thread on this.

I installed the GM ignition system and couldn't get it to start (no spark) turns out I didn't have a good enough ground for the module. Once I got it running it ran like crap, seems I got a bad module. I bought a MSD module and put it in - runs good now. Judging from the seat of my pants I don't really notice a power increase - I'll find out for sure on the 17th at the track.

High energy ignitions are great! And the more power you're putting out, the better ignition system you will need. You may not see much difference in an everyday driver car, but the higher performance motors sure will!
