Knock/pop sound from rear, one side, while making sharp turns

1964 Plymouth fury wagon. Leaf springs in rear not sure exactly what size but I'm assuming they are original. They are surface rusted it's hard to tell. They have these rubber bumpers at the end of the last leaf that look worn out.

When I make a sharp turn, only in one direction (or at least it's most significant on one side) I can hear a slight knocking or pop sound on one side. It's hard to feel and not that loud but annoying enough.

Is this my leaf spring bushings and bumpers?

No I don't think so I bought the car not to long ago I'm not even sure the gearing.

If I spin one wheel the other goes the opposite direction, in park. Also if I spin one wheel in neutral the other one doesnt spin... When the rear is up.

Rear end doesnt seem to make any noticable noise. I've taken the car on the freeway up to about 70 and it drives smooth.

The first 3 pics are drivers side. The last pic is passenger side. They both look the same pretty much. I forget which side does it but I think it's when I turn right sharply

Probably your bushings, they're done for.

Are those helper springs or something, for extra weight or towing?

Helper springs, worn bushings, etc. If you plan on keeping and driving it, I would replace the rear springs and shackles. Good springs would eliminate the need for the helper springs and eliminate at least half your problems.

erm..surprised noones mentioned axle bearings?
id jack it up again and try wiggling the axles with the wheels And the drum off.
leave the brakes attached just pull the drum off.
check for up and down And in and out movement.

64 wagon has tapered axles, who knows how long it's been since the drums were pried off. Could be axle bearings, or anything else inside the drums.
I'd determine which direction makes noise, find an empty parking lot, drive slowly in circles and lean out the tailgate to listen. Get someone to help drive.
The helper springs and bushings are also a definate suspect.

Definitely bearing are a suspect area. Just looking at the condition of the suspension back there I'm going with springs and bushings. On my 56 Desoto Wagon the drums were pulled for the first time in 2012 for brakes. The axle bearings were as good as the day they were installed.

Your springs bushes are absolute toast...

The pin or bolt is not even centered...rubber has disintegrated. Replace the spring bushes and you should be good.

I completely re did the entire brake system a couple weeks ago and put a dual master in. New full cast drums, stainless lines, wheel cylinders, shoes, hardware. So the brakes in rear are fine.

I kept the tapered axles. I didn't mess with the bearings or rear axle yet. One side weeps slightly I think the seal is probabaly worn out so I will address rear bearings soon. but I'm not getting any symptoms of a bad bearing as far I can tell.

It's a 9 passenger so I could just sit in the way back, open window and listen! if I get someone to drive

i think Kiwi has a Great Eye and has spotted your problem already.
i was so busy looking at all the other bushings i didnt even see what is clearly in sight.

Edit,also,i have a 69 b body 8-3/4 housing with axles but no center chunk,
its free if you want to pay shipping,ill include the drums and such too.
up to you if that would help.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think it's dead on. I need to replaced all the rear spring hardware/bushings.

Good to know about the helper springs. Didn't even know what those were. Did someone likely put them on because the springs were worn out and sagging?

Yes, or heavy loads.

How about it's hitting tailpipe hanger. There is so much worn it could be a number of things. Picture of SW shackles NOS not mine.

Exhaust is a good 1/2" at least from hangers/body and frame.
