Was several years ago and so when I decided to set one up, I opened a separate account for it. Had it about 9 years now. I sell on the Houston Craigslist too and whenever someone wants me to hold something while they drive from the other side of town, I ask if they have PayPal and if they do, and many do, I ask for a deposit. If they are serious, they are fine with that and come and that ensures them the part or whatever will be here plus I know they are on the way. I got tired of people asking me to hold stuff and then never showing up and that alone was the biggest complaint and it puts the money where their mouth is and stops the BSers.

I've been using it for a little over a year now and like it so far and have not had any issues. Like you said, shows you who is serious and who is full of bullcrap a little quicker.

The only thing I dont like are the fees. But I guess you cant get something for nothing and I usually ask the buyer to cover the fee, which most dont have a problem with.

It can also help protect both the buyer and the seller if things go wrong. Up to a point.

Use the words "nonrefundable deposit" to hold an item, and specify a time frame you'll hold it. After that, you keep the deposit and sell to someone else.

What I don't like about PayPal is that if you sell on eBay that is the only option you have. I used to take post office money orders but now unless it is local pickup I have no choice. Gee, that rule changed about the time eBay bought PayPal...

payment options...

You still have the option of alternative payment by stating it in your discription. Just be creative in your wording.... I use "M/O" to indicate "money order". And "contact seller for alternative payment methods"

i've been using them since 1998 when they were called "X.com" sure they carge fees when you accept payment but i tell you what there has been a few tiimes when i've been taken as a buyer and didn't get my stuff and pay-pal stepped up and got my money back,
one time i even got a letter from the department of treasury saying i was a victom of mail fraud and they gave me a password and web site to go to and sure enough some lady that scammed me on a palm pilot and was doing time and i was welcome to follow her case while she spent the next 6 years in jail in florida then 3-5 in arizona... we're talking almost 10 years for burning me for $325.00 and god knows who else.. since then i am a firm believer and happy to pay the fees

Ive only used it 3 or 4 times, i signed up for it because i don't use credit cards and the only thing i don't care for is some things you get you can use PayPal but they also want a credit card to for the purchase. The parts ive bought off members here i just send a check, im not yet familiar with paying with it to another person, yet anyway...

I had a card comprimized a few years back. Paypal was the only place it was listed but nothing ever happened. I did open a new account at a seperate bank just for internet stuff. I only have $12 in it right now. Every time i get ready to work on a car i just drop a thousand or so in it. We all know how quick you can go thru that. Anyway i figure if theres never much in it they cant steal it.
