I have my TKO 600 at Liberty's Gears for an update to eliminate the infamous 3rd gear block. My shift points are around 7000 and they said just the synchro update probably won't handle that kind of RPM's. He recommended Faceplating the gears and eliminating the synchros. The only downside is it's pretty aggressive for the street.

I can't make up my damn mind. I want it to shift good at full RPM but don't want to be driving a grain truck around town.

This is is a street strip car with most life on the street, but when I hit it, I want those gears to hammer in.

Anyone out out there have this Faceplating done and know what it's like on the street?

Any insight is surely appreciated.

faceplating

They did my TKO 600 in my old single turbo mustang. Made right at 630hp at the wheels. Loved every second of it.

They found an issue with my 3rd gear when I sent it in....fixed that too. Also did TKO900 upgrade. Never had any issues.

you had them do the Faceplating or just upgraded the synchros?

I had Liberty face plate the transmission.

I had MMR had upgraded it to TKO900 specs which is heat treating the internals.

It was never really running and together enough to do much street driving but I can tell you what street driving I did without my foot in it was just very notchy.

I had more problems with the clutch than anything until I went to twin disc mcleod.

I have pics of the transmission from when I sold it but its only of the outside which means nothing.

I remember i took Liberty like 11 weeks from sending my trans in, to getting it back. I also remember they shipped it back half *** compared to how I shipped it to them.

I have run a few different styles of performance modified a-833's on the street. It's not apples to apples in comparison but I would say that if you don't mind a little noise and drive the thing in a civil manner (not jerky on the throttle, etc.) it's very easy to drive. Have you seen a picture of face plated gears at all? If not I can post some. Essentially instead of a synchro assembly you have a large stator looking gear with five "paddles" that is accepted into the aftermarket clutch hub with a complimentary pattern. What this does is extend your "shift window" in comparison to all of the little teeth that must mate in a synchro assembly. I really like my trans that has been face plated.

Thanks guys..... Decided not to do the faceplating. I use my car more on the street and don't want to be clunking and jerking all over town. Just doing the synchro and shiftplate upgrade.

Ok, so I spoke too soon..... After doing a lot of research and watching YouTube videos of guys running face plated transmissions on the street, I decided to go ahead and do it plus a lot of other stuff.

List of mods........

Face plate 2nd-4th gear, threaded front cap, linkage upgrades, new seals, bronze fork pads, convert to .82 5th gear, thermal stabilization, shot peen

Thats funny as right now I have my buddies TKO600 apart in my garage. He got it stuck in two gears and has some second gear problems. It needs a second gear and I am putting the updated sycro's in it that use the friction material on them as it has the solid brass sycro's in it now. Also its getting the bronze shift fork pads. This is in a bigblock Camaro and its a street car as he has never had it to the track. Ron

Reminds me of the old days when guys would cut off every other dog leg tooth on the gears. Ron

I have done the every-other-toof mod, "pro-shift, and face plating on the a-833. Nothing lasted like the face plated box. It's a little clunky if you aren't a smooth operator. On the other hand missing a hard shift at high RPM can be really destructive so it's good insurance if you will. I have yet to hear anything good about the TKO600 transmissions in a performance application.

yeah, they suck out of the box..... Liberty modded ones are really good.... Or so I've read. We'll see.

7 Grand! My TKO Keisler won't go into third @ 4800. Told by Keisler (not Liberty) that there is an upgrade but my 2008 vintage TKO is too early of a version for a fix. Normal driving it is fine. When you really want (need) to romp it jams 2-3 every time.
