my damn lights go bright then get a little dimmer. kinda like flashing. they dont go all the way out. i unhook my alternator charging wire and they are fine. i got the charging wire going straight to the battery. anybody ever experienced this before and how do i fix this. even tried running a ground cable from the body to the engine. same issue. thanks guys.

I have my alternator wire hooked to the terminal block on the firewall..My power to my dash is also at the terminal block...You need to check to see how much voltage the alternator is putting out...

You didn't mention much about your charging system (mechanical or solid state regulator) is the dash pulsing too along with the ammeter gauge? Things I would check: Good ground from headlight harness to body to negative terminal/block, battery holding full charge, if it's a mechanical regulator, get a solid state look-alike (Standard VR101T I believe), and alternator output.

as stated previously, get yourself a sold state voltage regulator. your problem will be solved.

I'm curious, Did you solve your problem? and if so what was it? i may have the same exact thing going on. Although I get charging at low rpm and the "up and down" lights/charging on the highway.

Go buy some electronic spray cleaner. Remove the connectors from the bulkhead. Spray the cleaner into bulkhead wires and scrub the $hit out of them with a toothbrush. Pay particular attention to the slot that the fuseable link attaches to. Scrub the connector contacts as well. Reassemble and test. If this solves your problem (and hell even if it doesn't) go get a tube of dielectric grease and coat the connector pins so air doesn't get into bulkhead to cause oxidation.

When you unhook the wire everything's fine so it could be the connections especially if the car has set for awhile. Its most likely between alt and v-reg.. You should check the voltage out put on both. an alternator that IS charging the Battery will produce 13 (up to 14.5) volts with the headlights on or off (car running) Hook the meter up Put the RED multimeter lead on the battery positive terminal.
Put the BLACK lead on the battery negative terminal and check that, maybe you can rule out the alt. Good luck.

OR...You can go the MAD electrical route and also install some relays for the headlights. That will clean all your issues up. Check out madelectrical.com for more....
