I dug out set of custom Ross pistons in response to a 'Wanted' thread here and I believe he passed on them, but it got me to thinking, why did I get these in the first place? They are pop top slugs with a 4.28 bore but a compression height of only 1.732. Wrist pin hole uses a stock big block rod (1.094). There was no info sheet with them when I acquired them many years ago and well before stroker kits appeared on the scene. Best I can come up with is I was going to fit them into a 426W block using a stock stroke RB crank and a 7.1 rod which, according to my calculations, would leave them .018 in the hole. I do have a 413 AAQA block sitting around and was thinking it could go .080 over but I haven't had it checked. My best guess is these were for something like NSS or other class racing where a 426W was required or the engine size to car weight ratio favored using a 426 vs a 440. I called Ross but they said the Job # was no longer in their records. So, can anyone think of a different way to use these? Maybe even in a .030 over 383? Ideas/thoughts? Here's a pic:
