I've got a lug nut that just spins and won't un-thread. More precisely, the stud spin and the nut is along for the ride. The car is a '66 Belvedere, the offending nut/stud comb is on the rear, wheels are rust old Cragar S/S and are destined for the scrap heap. Any suggestings on how to get it off?

Grinder OR cold chisel with a BFH
good-luck

Try soaking the lug nut with penetrating oil and use an impact while putting twisting pressure (put your feet against the bottom while pulling out on the top) on the wheel, assuming all other lug nuts are removed. Good luck.

So, it won't loosen off. Will it tighten up though? If so you could keep cranking until you break it.

Tried wedging the impact at an angle to bind the stud on the flange, or the stud shaft in the hole?

use a prybar to apply pressure against the wheel and the nut at the same time like you are trying to pry the nut off, then put the ratchet or impact gun socket on the nut while you are apply pressure and try to get it to break loose.

the effect of the pry bar is to keep the lug from spinning while you loosen the nut.

use an angle grinder to cut the lug in half.no need to worry about damage to the wheel,so cut away.stud is spinning in the axle, hope the hole isnt too wollowed out.try not to keep spinning the lug,you will ruin the axle.be carefull with a torch if used, can damage the drum and axle if you get over zelous.good luck.

Hmm, cock the wheel to aid in wedging the stud...nice.

Thanks all for the advice. I wound up using a dremel tool with a cut-off wheel, then a chisel and "small" sledge hammer. The Dremel cut off wheel(s) were small enough to get into the spot between the spoke of the rim. The lug nut had a long shank so I had to first cut the head off, then after the wheel was off, remove the rest of the nut and replace the stud.
