Matching numbers and....

I went out to check the numbers on a recent purchase, my 1968 Road Runner. The good news is I found the HP on the 383 engine block, which told me that it is a High Performance Engine, and not a regular 383.

I had to do some minor sanding, but I was able to uncover the last three numbers on the Left Rear of the block, which did match the last three numbers of my VIN. I stopped there, assuming that the rest would match. I didn't want to continue sanding off the paint.

I did NOT find the number for the transmission, which should be right next to the engine number (where the top of the transmission meets the top of the engine block).

Is there somewhere else the transmission number might be? Perhaps under the car?

Otherwise, I think I may have an original engine but a replacement transmission.

PS..I found the trunk body number. What other matching body numbers should there be (other than the fender tag)?

Radiator support number should match trunk number and SO number on fender tag.

There should be a pad with a partial V.I.N. on the passenger side of the transmission down low and near the front.

Keep in mind the vin# on passenger side starts in 1969. If there is no number on the driver side top left close proximity to the vin on the block, then the transmission has been replaced. The easy thing to do is look on the driver side case where the pan bolts up, under the shift linkage, and get the Part number. That will at least tell you if the transmission is correct for the year.starts with (likely) PK 2801541 early 68 383 hp, or 2892093 late 68.(april 68' build onward)

In 68, Auto trans and Man Trans have the numbers in different places. On auto , at top opposite engine vin. On man, on right side of trans on a machined pad.
