Matching numbers criteria

To be numbers matching the VIN must be present on the block. Really it's the last digits that are important. In 68 the block VIN location will be on the bell housing end and up top near the oil pressure switch. Should read something like 8E123456. 8 meaning the year and E would be the assembly plant, which in this case is LA.

Keeping the original engine in a car is always a good idea - unless you want to build a monster motor - then in that case put the original block under the work bench while you play with the 700 HP 496.

To me numbers matching means more than just the motor the entire drivetrain would need to have stayed with the car engine, tranny rear end. I personnally think thats enough but there are purist that think even the components from the motor like the starter, carb, distributor and so on all should fall in a certain build time to go with the build date. Same with body components like the wiper motor and any body parts stamped with the vin should all match the car vin. The vin tag and buildsheet need to be the same but then theres Los Angles cars that never left the factory with the build sheet so it starts to get confusing. So what was the question?

To me,numbers matching has come to be rediclous ,if you were to replace your engine block have the" identical" block from another car, what the hell does it matter,it's the same hunk of iron with a different number. To go one step farther,if you replace "one" part on an original car it is no longer numbers matching, everything is date coded including sheet metal and you will never have it the way it left the plant . I sold a date coded wiper switch to a fellow about a month ago cheap to get rid of it, he would have paid whatever I ask,I wonder who is going to take the dash apart to check the date stamp !! :confused2:

X2! Technically the Air in the tires was different in the day than today, where can we get the NOS air, by chance!

I agree, It doesn't matter to me if a car is all original or not as long as it looks right. Sadly, all this numbers matching BS has driven a segment of these cars out of the price range of the average guy. 99.9% of the people that see my car don't give a damn that it's not numbers matching, they just like seeing a classic old muscle car.
