The Forum is a wonderful place to learn and research.

As far as the Max Wedge engine:
-I would suggest NO
Reason being:

-Max Wedge engines were RACE ENGINES, PERIOD!
-Not "nice" to drive on a cruise night.
-High compression, temperamental, NASTY, RADICAL.
-VERY EXPENSIVE to build, of course, my440 "Max Wedge" I have $2,000 in my #452 heads alone.

Do what I did:
A 440 "Based" Max Wedge style engine. LOOKS IDENTICAL
And yes, it has more HP than my "stock" 1970 Hemi.

Thanks!

Ok im not worried about it being radical or anything, im juat hoping for a good platform for down the rd making 8-900 all motor or maybe spray, ive been told they aren't good motors to build...

long story short, Im torn between a stock 73 440 that runs and I can drop in ( has forged internals 8-9:1 compression) and 413 max wedge really 60s model that looks like it doesn't need much else ( has headers )

440 1000$
413 500$

Well,
You should be concerned.
My BUD has a Real One
See pics below.

The engine needs to idle for 15 min or so before he can drive it.
And then it is easily stalled and difficult to get running again.
This engine is designed to be RUN at W.O.T. only (Wide Open Throttle)

dotsondylan,
It is important to understand a few things when considering "building a car"
Remember: In 1962-1963 ERA, these engines were not sold to the public.
Compression ratios were: 11.5-1 AND 13.5-1
This is extremely high!
This along with HUGE Intake Ports, which meant the "performance range" was again WOT.
High RPM

Non driver suitability for cruising.

A quote from: Max Wedge.com
"These heads flowed like monsters and with the new crossram intake manifold with staggered two four barrel carbs made these powerful 413 engine nearly unapproachable on the strip"

You have a real 413 Max Wedge? Or is it a 413 4 barrel motor. Big difference. If it's a real Max Wedge complete motor sell it and build a 440.
Doug

Everyone is concerned about how practicle the motor is , when they should be concerned about just "Dropping it into a 65 "A" Body". 65 Dart is an "A Body". And yes we make all the fiberglass for that car.

not sure what it is, just says its an old max wedge high compression with closed port heads or something like that.

Sure they are good but these days they are worth a ton of money so I suggest you do what DVW says.

I ran one in the 80's and it was a non issue driving around. Sure it was cold blooded but don't recall it being a major problem. But then again I'm in CA.

Max Wedge heads are not closed chamber. I seriously doubt it is a Max Wedge. A big block of any type is a very poor fit in an early A-Body Dart. Tons of fabrication is required. If your new to this do yourself a favor and use a 360 or build a 408 SB stroker.

Send us a picture of the engine (especially the intake manifold and carbs) and we may be able to identify it for you. Also write down the the engine I D numbers on the driver side front of the block, just below the intake manifold. They are on a flat pad at that location. Then we can tell you what you have.

Sorry, but they are.

Like was said best bet is sell it even if its not a max wedge and build a 400 or 440 stroker as they are easier to get parts for and you can build a nice driver with enough power to but a 3700 lb street car in the 10's on pump through the exh. Thats what I did as I use a 440 block. Its not hard with the aluminum heads and stroker kits out there today. And you can make either eng still look like a real max wedge. Ron
