Hey guys,
I'm looking at buying a 71 'GTX' clone and it seems pretty solid and is for a good price. My concerns are with the title transfer. This is my first time buying. I'm from Pennsylvania and the car is in Maryland. The guy says that in MD cars this old don't need inspected so its not. In PA they do.
I want to have all of my ducks in a row if I want to buy it. What all paper work do I need to make sure I can get the title from him to me and from MA to PA. Once I get it back to PA I think I will be good.

From what I can find I need
1. Assignment of Ownership
2. Odometer Disclosure
3. Bill of Sale
4. Insurance

Questions:
Do I need to get the title notarized?
Does the car need to pass MD inspection?
Do I need to get an MD registration if Im going to take the car straight home to PA?

Any help with this would be great.

I think I would call the PA. DVM and ask them. Here in NY older cars don't have titles, you sign the back of the owners card and off it goes but they do need inspected, just not for emissions. It would seem to me that its more important that it passes a PA. inspection, if it doesn't it could cost you a lot of extra $$$.

No, over 20 years old can get historic plates in MD. No inspection needed.but that is irrelevant. I have sold and traded cars to people in PA. I always went with the person I was selling to to get the transfer work done at a notary. The person does not need to be there though. You will need a bill of sale. You can write something up quick stating you paid X amount for the car. I usually include the vin. You both sign it. Have the seller sign the MD title on the back where they are supposed to. Signiture and printed. Don't you fill out anything til your notary person tells you to. Other than that, have the current mileage, your ID and your wallet. I know PA has historic plates for classic cars as well. Not sure if that means they don't need to be inspected or not.

My car come from Cumberland Md andthe title transfer was no problem. Just take your title and bill of sale to a notory and have them do the paper work and stamp it you'll be good to go.

It was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be

Bought a car from PA. had to have it inspected in Calif. DMV had to physically match up the VIN numbers. No problem except paying the calif. tax. :angryfire:

I used to live in MD many years ago although while I was there I never bought a PA car and tried to get it titled in MD. I did however buy a car in PA and have it titled in KY and did exactly what hemi mentioned without incident.

1. The inspection in another state is not an issue. If you put regular plates on it, it will require inspection in PA. If you put antique plates on, there is no inspection required.

2. Does the car have a title ? If so, have the seller sign and date it.* (see below).

3. If the car does not have a title, you'll need a bill of sale as well as a registration from the current owner.

4. Make a pencil tracing on the VIN tag. It's hit or miss whether or not they'll require it, but it's better to have it than not.

* Be careful with this. If the car has an out of state title, you're golden. But if you're buying/selling a car to/from someone in PA DO NOT sign the title unless you're in the presence of a notary. Signing a title without notarization will render it null and void and you'll have to get a new one.

Thanks guys this is a lot more help than the DMV website.
I will spell out what I am hoping to do any tell me if Im worng in what I would like
Im assuming the car has a MD title.

I will get the seller to do the bill of sale and both of us sign the title over to me. (No notory)
I will take the title to PA and get it notorized to make everything offical in PA. (Just me not the guy selling the car)
I will get it registered in PA, inspected and put normal plates on it

Sound Good?

I don't think you need to have him sign the title. Check with you notary to see what you need to do.

Yon MUST have a tracing of the vin# or a certified Pa. state inspection mechanic sign and verify the vin on a pa form. No exceptions.

Ok thanks guys this is a real help.
One last question- To get it home I might have to drive it there. Will the MD plates on the car work until I get it home and get my own temporary plates?

I'm sure technically you should probably get a temp tag. But a cop would be being a real asshole if he got you on that especially with a bill of sale from the same day. But some of them are like that.

You are going to have to work that out with the seller. Most likely he will be taking the tags off the car. I assume towing it home is not an optio so maybe ypu could do the title work and get the plates for it if no inspection is needed, or they should issue you a temp tag then get a ride back to get the car. Or be a rebel and snag the tag off something else to drive it home. I have done that on a few occasions. I bought a 64 dart and had an hour ride home using the tag off my mothers honda. The damn thing over heated the whole way. Barely went 40 mph. Took all back roads and made it without incident.

Call these people tomorrow and use my name as a reference. They are a pa DMV agency and can do anything that pa DMV can, they will give you 100 percent correct information. Let me know if I can be of any more assistance.
