Hello, is there a trick to installing a mechanical fuel pump? the bolts don't want to line up with the holes, I can thread the right side of the pump in but the left doesn't want to start, I felt around with a small screw driver and the left bolt hole doesn't seem like its aligned.

Is it the same pump that originally came out? If not, compare the two for dimensions. Does it have a part number on it?

the new one is a holley 12-440-1the numbers check out that it's for a big block.the old one looks like a carter. the holley is a much bigger diameter it sits right up against the block, I tried to put the old one back in but i have the same problems.

Ive got a Holley on mine and it fit so it should work. I was able to thread the left bolt in and wiggle the pump to get the right bolt in, it was a pain and no to mention you are also dealing with the pushrod trying to come back out. To help a little put some assembly lube on the pushrod, it's thick so it'll help hold it up and keep it from sliding down as fast. Another thing to watch out for is if the gasket keeps twisting in the way of the bolt

Just put the same pump on my 440 a few weeks ago with no problem, the body does hit the block which I don't like but it will stay for now.
Try holding the pump out a bit while starting the bolts.

You could try bumping your engine over a bit to make more slack on the fuelpump pushrod.

Of course the pump didnt come with directions and It's the first time I've replaced one that rod in the block is supposed to be on top of the pump arm? It slides up and down?

Yes on top of the arm.You have to fight the spring resistance of the pump.

ok, the rod doesnt move when I try to push it up, how do I do that? there's what looks like a plug right at the bottom of the rod location on the block, is that an access hole or just a casting mark. That spring on the holley is a beast, the old pump I can compress it by hand

if you can, turn the motor by hand while you put finger presure on the pump rod.wait till it goes up all the way in and just starts back down.then you sould be able to install the pump pretty easy.

ok

I was so pissed I kicked the neighbors dog since I don't have one, unfortunately it turned out to be the neighbor kid in his halloween costume, the fact it was walking on two legs should have been a tip off, why does this always happen to me? lol

Glad you got it figured out that pushrod is a pain in the butt in more ways than one. I just got done changing my pushrod out because my cam ate the other one.

...I need to change my pushrod too... how can I get this rod out ? Do I have to remove the valley pan ? Or is there another way ?
( 440 cui BB )

Thanks and greetings

That's what the plug under the fuel pump is for, remove the plug and out comes the push rod.

When the engine is rotated so that No 6 cylinder is at TDC on the firing stroke, the fuel pump pushrod is on the heel of it's cam lobe. The fuel pump will be easy to fit in this position.

440+6 you forgot to mention he'll also have to take the pump off, the rod will just sit behind the pump lever if he only takes the plug out.

Yea, I don't think you can even get to it without removing the pump can you? and the pump lever might be hard to get around also.
I believe you need the correct type of rod for your cam, some have hardened tips and others brass. I know my 6bbl uses hardened tip.
Maybe someone can help with the correct rod for your application.
