I'm wondering if you really need to run a "mellonized" intermediate shaft gear on a Hydraulic Roller cam. The cam is from Howards and they are telling me the Milodan 21505 would work just fine. Talking to 440 Source and they are saying mellonizing is an absolute must.

So whats the deal? I want to run the Milodan shaft but I dont want it to chew up the cam gear.

Is it a billet roller? Copper colored between lobes? Or does it look like a flat tappet, cast in color?

I would think as many cams as Howard's sells if the Milodon ones don't work it would be all over the internet.

I have one of the Milodon in my motor now waiting for the Dyno(to be dynoed tomorrow!). I ordered one of the Hughes melonized ones and it came in after the Milodon one. The fit was much sloppier on the Hughes so we went with the Milodon. My builder said it appears to be treated steel of some kind.We shall see and then I will have to try and get a refund with Hughes on theirs.

If a roller cam is ground on a "Cast Iron Core" then a regular gear is used. If the roller cam is billet, then you need Bronze or the "Melonized" gear.

Out of curiosity, exactly is the "mellonized" process?? Is it similar to Parkerizing ??? Is it a heat treating process or is it an alloy, similar to aluminum- silicone bronze (percentage of aliminum bronze varies).....is there an ASME or ASTM or SAE description/spec than be referred to for comparison purposes.......

Not totally sure but here is a link explaining it.

Melonite Processing

We were told if you plan on racing with a hydraulic roller cam you will need the Bronze gear, if it’s street use. you can get by with the Melonized gear.

Follow what Howards recommends. It's likely ground on a 1050 core which is billet. I believe this particular core can have the gear treated in a way that allows you to run a steel gear. There is a name for the treatment of the gear, but that has left my memory.
If it was a higher end billet core it would not say use a steel gear.
