I am wanting to replace the 383 with a 400/451 stroker engine for my 1964 Polara. I have been looking at Muscle Motors, and from what I read they do build a pretty good motor. But, they are located in Michigan, where I'm located in South Central Nebraska I was trying to find a shop closer. We have a good Machine Shop in Hastings (Gessfords Machine), but they specialize in mostly Chevrolet. The motor I would like to install would be totally streetable, running on 91 octane fuels, in the 450+ HP range. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

It's a bit of a drive for you, but I use Smith Machine in Wichita, KS. He knows his stuff and is really efficient. He even pointed out a few minor things I didn't realize that really helped me out since I was doing the assembly. Very reasonable pricing too!

I would recommend Mid America Racing Engines, they are pretty close to you. Dave Bruns machined, assembled, and dyno'ed my 505 ci Max Wedge engine. Very good work, excellent prices. They are a a great "Mopar" machine shop for sure. I called around to "Mopar" machine shops all over the country and decided on him. I drove to his shop from Utah with all my parts, and then the completed engine was crated and shipped to my home. Dave is also a super nice good man, very easy to work with, which meant a lot to me. My max wedge 505 engine dyno'ed at 620 HP @ 5900 rpm, 620 TQ @ 4800 rpm on 92 octane pump gas! Good parts in this engine, including CNC ported Edelbrock RPM head from Modern Cylinder heads, opened fully to Max Wedge port size, 265 cc intake port. Full max wedge size A&A crossram, 2-600 cfm Edelbrock carbs modified by A&A, Bullet Cam, solid flat tappet, 259/263 @ 0.050 lift, around .600 lift. 4.25 stroke crank, 7.1" rods, Lots of other good parts, too much to list.

I have used Chuck Lofgren in Cedar, MN. He now works out of Knowlton's Thunderheads north of Minneapolis. Chuck knows his stuff.

I used Chuck Lofgren out of Cedar, MN for my transmission and rear end. My builder for the motor also used to consult with Chuck when he wanted another opinion on things. He's a mopar specialist and pricey, but does know his stuff.
