He has passed after a very long battle with ALS. Chicago Bears Steve McMichael...aka. MONGO...finally has succumbed to the horrible disease ALS. He had been suffering for a very long time and remained steadfast in his defence, as he always showed while playing for the best NFL team and their Super Bowl crew in the 1985 championship. The Great Chicago Bears!!! RIP MONGO...cr8crshr/Bill:praying::praying::praying::usflag::usflag::usflag:

The mid to late 80s was a magic time in Chicagoland thanks to the Bears. The '85 Bears were incredible not just based on their talented players, but due to the larger than life personalities of so many of their players then especially McMichael.
Talk radio was really going strong here at that time too, led by WLUP, which I listened to several of the radio personalities there pretty religiously, including Kevin Matthews, and the Steve and Garry show. It seemed like every radio personality had their own Bears player who'd call in or visit the show regularly, and Mongo was a regular on the Steve and Garry show. He was such a blast to listen to there. I still crack up remembering him talking about his wife and other players wives who'd hang around with each other, he called them the "Kotex Mafia".
WGN TV Sportscaster Jarrett Payton is the son of legendary Bears running back Walter Payton, and he gave a touching tribute to Mongo on the evening news last night, about how much Steve provided support and inspiration to him after his dad passed away, and what an honor it was to give the Football hall of fame speech for both his dad, and last year for his dear friend Steve McMichael when he got inducted to the hall of fame.

RIP Steve/Mango, that was the best defense for sure, 84-85 Bears
Defense wins championships

now I understand why @MarPar Mario's avatar has changed again
didn't recognize it & now I do

R.I.P. to a great Bear. Also a Packer for a season at the end.

I only knew him from his WCW wrestling career, never followed football but I liked his character.

No disrespect intended at all, but when you say Mongo, I think Alex Karras.
RIP Steve.
True, but McMichael was also given that Moniker because he was very similar to Karas and his character portrait, so the nickname stuck for both.

Here's a funny video with him
