Mopar-City For Sale $2,000,000

Saw that today too. The price seems high? Not sure you can make on schlepping taillights and what not. Going in blind would suck, hope it doesn't all end up crushed.

I worked there off and on. Theres a ton of parts, a bunch of engines stored inside and parts cars, many with core engines still in them. Only a few employees. Phone constantly ringing. The inventory is massive, but its not 100% organized and accounted for because of numerous buy outs over the years.

The land is worth 750k+ is what I was told, and there is quite a bit. Old farmhouse and several newer pole buildings. The equipment is there for the machine shop to be fully functional and have everything done in house. Engine building room. Lots and lots of high performance/race parts. ETC.

I'm not sure its completely out of line pricewise. Just have to find the right person willing to take it on.

The owner isn't getting younger and just wants to spend the rest of his life tinkering on his own mopars and hobbies. Been around since 1974.

I think the challenge is younger guys with the energy and knowledge to take over are far and few between, let alone financially able to swing the deal. Hope he can find that person.

Regardless of price, it's just cool as hell it is still there and in operation in 2022.
Hats off to the owners, I hope they get a buyer to take over.
That said, i can see the real estate selling after Vanderbrinks or similar auction off everything of value.

15 acres of land with a couple building and an inhabitable house on it in that part of the country isn't 750K. Probably a stretch as always with pricing stuff, go high on the number, coming down is easier. Land is about 7-10K an acre.

Problem is you have a $2,000,000 investment at asking price, how many $ coming in on a yearly basis would constitute a "good" return for time and effort.

Inventory on that place and getting a solid number, yikes, what a nightmare. Also making sure the good stuff sticks around at time of closing. Seen that too many times with businesses. Not saying that will happen, it's a HUGE risk.

I agree on the potential EPA issues. Could be a real PIA.

Maybe the current owner is just "burned out" & wants to just throw in the towel or maybe has health issues!

It's an ongoing sale, been for quite a while now too...
when stuff is for sale for well over a year
there's good reasons why it still hasn't sold

I'm not saying it may not be worth it either
but at a business perspective or outlook

If someone is trying to finance it,
from any real lending institutions/bank etc.
they, "MoPar City", better have great books
with great profit margins, taxes filling up to date etc.
for quite a few years in a row, showing a good business modle
you have to take the hobbyist (salivations) out of the equation
or it will have to be a mostly all cash deal
with a Daddy Gotrocks funding
for that kind of $$$

all they (banks/lending co.'s) care about is real collateral
the real property
the parts would have to be, accounted for &
all be inventoried (his taxes on inventory up to date too)
& all parts values added/documented
even then, that part is a very small part of the business values
assessments, in their eyes...

too bad it's in a colder/wetter climate
or 75% across the country

my $1.25

I heard if he doesn't find a buyer, the stock will go to the crusher. I hope that's some BS rumor. Doesn't make sense to me but I'm no businessman.

I've said it in other threads, if the inventory was still worthwhile and the pricing reasonable, someone like Stephens would buy him out. I would think. They aren't making the originals anymore and anyone who doesn't buy repop has limited options...

Yep!

Had a dream not to long ago it happened. I went down there to look for something. He said sure go out and take a look maguilla. I walked out the back door, came around the one building and the yard was empty. All of the cars gone.

Yesterday a member of the 62-65 Moparornocar email group posted that he just talked to Larry, and Larry said he is never closing the doors - spread the word.

He may not think he will - but they may close for him. How old is the owner and any potential heirs? This would indeed be a sad story if the crusher came a calling. If it were mine and I was well heeled financially w/o this - I would price it to sell fast just to keep the legend alive. If you’re old and have a lot of $$ - hell you can’t take it with you so why not - But that’s just my kind of thinking. Maybe I would cut a deal where I was a party to it until I croaked if so desired.

Larry Pontnack is 80 years young. No point in stopping now. Keep on trucking. Obviously, he loves the work. Stopping would be a certain death sentence. Just keep on having a great time until he doesn't wake up one morning for breakfast, or maybe he just slumps over while looking at an electroluminescent instrument panel. He might have another 15-20 years of loving his work and enjoying life.

I completely agree with the keep on keepin on deal - my only point is if he croaks while staring at that electroluminescent instrument panel and has made no plans - That’s when the crusher could quickly become involved. That seems as tho it would break his heart from the grave. Plans made today for tomorrow would serve him well.

I've never seen a used parts seller cash out and sell any parts at less than full blown retail ever. It's like a sickness they can't overcome and it's always the same result. The stuff deteriorates, family doesn't know WTF to do with it and it's auctioned or gets buried.
