Hi all,

I know of a NOS Mopar Gold box and I'm considering picking it up for my 440 but I'm not sure if it will be suitable? I know it says 'Race only' but what is the a reason for that? Will it break things or just burn out quick?

I have to be honest, this is my first non computer controlled ignition system and I'm a bit out of my depth. I have a brown capped distributor that I think is the MP one, an MP coil and an orange box still in the bay.

The engine is out of the car and it wont be a race car, I just want a good strong spark. I'm aiming to get the 440 up to about 5-550hp eventually, with a 6ix pack intake and alloy heads, when money permits.

So what would I need to run with the gold box to make it worth while? Or if its a waste, what would you recommend?

Thanks for any help in advance!

IIRC an orange box is an HP street-friendly box, and the gold one is for balls-out racing.

i have an orange box on my GTX, and it's been great with no problems (mildly warmed 440)

im sure somebody with more knowledge than me will chime in...

The gold box is not street-compatible. The orange- and other-color boxes have been garbage for about a decade now. Do the HEI upgrade and you'll never look back.

Well I've skipped on the Gold box. Thanks for the heads up. I might just clean and run the set up I have until I can make a decision on what exactly to run.

Slantsixdan; thanks for the link but its a bit harder to piece together a system like that in Australia. I'd like a HEI set up but thought most were way to pricey. If some one made a kit ready to roll that didn't cost me an organ I'd be interested.

Anyone recommend a nice setup that wont cost the earth?

Heaps of Holdens use the same kind of HEI described in the link; parts should be readily available locally. The module looks a little different but the streets are paved with them in Oz (Bosch BIM-24 and similar); see here.
