Generally;
Yes the steeper {lower} gears will help for torque multiplications
helps move a heavy car, IMO for street/strip a 10:1 final ratio
basically your trans 1st gear ratio x rear end gear ratio
{& tire size, taller tire cuts the ratio}...
That is a great place to start...
a 3.73:1 or 3.90:1 is a decent compromise
for more of a mostly strip car/street light burner 4.10:1 - 4.88:1's
depending on your tire size & engines rpm range
play with this program
http://vexer.com/automotive-tools/speed-rpm-calculator
it's not "100% real world", play with the torque converter efficiency @ 85-90%
change the rpm-bar to match what your car does in high gear crossing the line,
but it gives you an idea of what changes to gear & tire etc. can do...
